*Waves*
Title - Dead Alive
Fandom- Red Dwarf
Pairing- None. Well, maybe the slightest of Lister/Rimmer
Rating - PG
Spoilers - Slight for Better Than Life and Queeg
Author's Notes - *waves* Hi, erm, this is my first Red Dwarf drabble/ficlet, set at the end of Series 2. It's not really that slashy, well, maybe not slashy at all, but I thought I'd be brave and post it anyway! Enjoy!
He’s not a philosopher, never considered the Big Questions in life; why are we here, where do we go, what is the meaning of it all? He's never been into all that smeg. At a push he’d have to go with forty two, but now he’s not so sure, not so sure if he cares any more. What use is the meaning of life out here? With only a dead man, a cat and a computer to share it with. Fiji's gone. Krissie's gone. So what's the point? What is the smegging point?
It’s difficult to stay chipper when death isn’t so much staring you in the face, as trying to punch you in it.
And failing.
Rimmer’s fists flail ineffectually; pass through his head as though he wasn't there at all. But it’s the other way around, they both know it; Rimmer isn’t there, not really, however real he looks, however perfectly Holly projects his image, he’s just a hologram, just a bunch of light particles bouncing around.
Just a dead man.
It’s happening more and more often now, these outbursts. Smeg knows what set this one off; the death of his father was a long time ago now, in all senses of the term, and the hell of Holly’s April fool is almost forgotten, if not forgiven; they'll get him back for that, it's the only thing Rimmer smiles about any more; revenge. Rimmer's fists drop to his sides, the screams give way to sobs and there’s nothing he can do to help, nothing he can do to stop them; not a soothing word or a comforting touch.
You can’t touch a ghost.
Rimmer hates him for being alive - he knows that for a fact - whimpers that he's not worth it, wastes his time, doesn't deserve his second chance, doesn't deserve to live.
Lister can't help but agree, wishes he could change things.
But he doesn't deserve to die either.
