Ficlet. Rimmer/Lister. "Bunkmates". PG.
Hej everyone. I'm new to this comm and thought I'd post a fic by way of an introduction. This one is unbeta-ed, so please ignore any remaining mistakes and the distinct lack of plot.
Title: Bunkmates
Pairing: Rimmer/Lister pre-slash
Timeline: Series 8
Summary: Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding that is entirely not Rimmer’s fault, the two bunkmates have to actually bunk up. Cuddly times ensue.
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: They’re not mine, they belong to the BBC and Grant and Naylor. More’s the pity.
Words: 640
~ Bunkmates ~
When Rimmer wanted to go to sleep that night, Lister wouldn’t let him. He stood in front of the lower bunk, hands on his hips, wearing his long johns and looked at him sternly, until Rimmer couldn’t take it anymore.
“Oooh, what is it?” he breathed out in annoyance.
“There’s pot noodle in me bunk.”
“So? You’ve slept in worse.”
“I hate pot noodle. I’d rather sleep in a mud puddle occupied by leeches.”
Rimmer let out a sigh of frustration, “I hardly see why that should be my fault.”
“Oh, I see” Lister grinned without a spark of humour in his eyes, “so you pissing off ‘Furball’ Johnson during the Canary mission today and then telling him the upper bed in our cell was yours so he wouldn’t destroy your real bunk, which left me without a dry duvet and mattress, is not your fault, then?”
Rimmer didn’t dignify this with a reply.
“Jiggle over.” Lister then commanded and Rimmer couldn’t for the life of him fathom why he complied.
But there he was, moving to the side so Lister could climb into the bunk with him.
An awkward silence followed, in which both of them tried to find an adequate and comfortable sleeping position in the darkness without getting into each other’s hair, but it was to no avail.
When Lister’s legs were more or less cramped between Rimmer’s and Rimmer’s upper body was sprawled over Lister, effectively choking him, Lister announced from underneath, “This ain’t working, Rimmer. I suggest we spoon up.”
“We what?”
“It’s the most comfortable sleeping position for two adults sharing a bunk the size of a tiny park bench. Now get off and spoon me.”
Reluctantly, Rimmer entangled himself from Lister and did as he was told. He watched Lister roll onto his side, presenting his back to Rimmer and Rimmer spooned up behind him.
He didn’t know what he was supposed to do with his arm so he draped it over Lister. It wasn’t his fault that his hand came to rest on Lister’s chest – there was simply no other place for it to go.
Lister’s own hand came up immediately, and Rimmer thought he was going to remove his, but he just placed his own hand on top of Rimmer’s and pressed Rimmer’s arm against his body.
“What are you doing, Listy?” Rimmer whispered.
He felt Lister tense for a heartbeat, then he replied innocently, “Nothing. You don’t seem to mind.”
“And how would you know?”
“Because you wouldn’t have called me Listy otherwise.”
“Right. That’s just…” he was going to say preposterous, but stopped himself, because he realized that Lister was in fact right. So instead, he simply cleared his throat and ended lamely with, “Oh, I don’t know what it is.”
“Night, Rimsy.” Lister mumbled sleepily. He moved back just a fraction, snuggling up to Rimmer and, defeated, Rimmer let him. He even encouraged him, although he had no idea why his body did things his mind clearly forbade him to do, by using his arm to press Lister tightly against him.
He felt Lister’s thumb draw lazy circles on the back of his hand and felt safe to relax into the sensation. He also became aware of the fact that his face was mere inches away from the back of Lister’s head.
In one last attempt to get his dignity back, Rimmer breathed into Lister’s ear, “If the guard comes in now and rats on us, we won’t be able to take a leak for weeks without the other guys trying to give us a cheek slap.”
“Yeah, I know” Lister sighed, but didn’t budge.
“Right. Well, goodnight.” He moved his head to rest his face against Lister’s head, using him as a pillow.
Before he drifted off into sleep, Rimmer dimly noticed that their fingers were entwining.
