Other ways to become an officer?

Pretty much what it says on the tin. We saw Lister try to become a chef to outrank Rimmer, but would he have been an officer?

What other postings on Red Dwarf would be officer status besides navigation officer? What other exams could be taken?

Will Lister be an officer if he passes his mechanical engineering exams?

These questions and many others will be answered in the next episode of...Soap! Er...wrong show...

Well, in "The End", Holly describes Petersen as a catering officer, which I've always assumed is another name for chef. How on Earth (or Io) did he sober up long enough to pass the exam? ;)

I thought Petersen might have been a chef before he joined up with the JMC. IE Culinary School type deal.

It would make more sense if his drinking habit had got out of control after he qualified rather than before. But if so, "Infinity..." is definitely a separate continuity as in that he's said to have got drunk "every night of his life since he was 12". ;)

When has continuity made any sense with Red Dwarf? But, I do know some high functioning alcoholics, (Bio dad was one of them)and Petersen could be one of them.

Maybe he belongs to the My Drunk Kitchen school of cooking.

I kind of liked how they mentioned Kochanski's ex was a chef, so there's a bit of a psychological undertone. (Whereas Kochanski was a navigation officer - which iirc, is what Rimmer wants to be...)

Yes, I think that's an example of Doug (by himself at this point) retconning something in a way which makes sense psychologically and doesn't clash with our previous knowledge. Credit where it's due. :)
