AU Fics / Kink Meme Reminder
Recently we've been treated to quite a few AU fics (50 Shades, Kronette's Librarian!Rimmer fic, the Dirty Dancing one) and it's got me thinking about AUs I'd like to read (ideally, obviously no-one's obligated to write them for me). ;)
Historical ones are springing most readily to mind. I think it's because Rimmer's hideous family would fit so well as an aristocratic or social climbing clan forcing him to do what they consider proper - and then he catches sight of (for example) Stable boy!Lister and falls hopelessly in love. Much rolling around in hay lofts ensues. (This is thematically similar to the Merchant Ivory film "Maurice" starring a young Rupert Graves aka Lestrade from "Sherlock".)
I realise historical AUs do raise the question of racism and whether to ignore it or incorporate it. One way to get around that could be to turn it around by having Rimmer be the outsider e.g. he could be a vicar in inner-city Liverpool. Or turn things around completely and have Lister be the wealthy, privileged one for once.
It was the Dirty Dancing AU which put all this in my head and that sprang from a prompt on the Kink Meme, so this is just a reminder that if you haven't looked on there for a while, a lot of prompts have been filled recently.
So what AUs would others like to see? They can be detailed ones or just PWP scenarios.

Rimmer sick with resentment? No change there, then. ;)

What if that huge bulge that Lister sports turns out to be a packer? If he's a trans man, and even though presumably surgical alterations have improved by the time of the show, he hasn't been able to afford anything other than top (chest) surgery. It's why he's a little body shy, keeping his longjohns on as much as possible. Inevitably, though, sharing such a small space means that Rimmer finds out.
Maybe he was never 'our Rob or Ross'. Maybe he started out as Rose.
(This is the sort of thing I'd write as an AU, not just PWP. Especially now you've got me thinking.)
I'd be hesitant to write Rimmer as FTM because then his backstory of being the bullied underachiever in the family would be frankly misogynistic.

How about: Chief Hollister is going to strip Detective Lister of his badge because of his constant insubordination and messy paperwork, unless he can pull out a miracle and solve a high-profile murder by Tuesday... and to make things worse, he's saddled with a new partner who is irritatingly by-the-book and near impossible to work with. Will they be able to work together, or is another homicide on the cards?

Let's face it, Hollister would make a perfect put-open police chief or sheriff.
