Don't know what happened between the book and TV series.
Chloe has said in interviews that she was very nervous about taking on the role, and that came through as the character being more uptight than written. In VIII, she had the audience, and has also said in interviews that she became much more relaxed and confident when she realized people were actually laughing at her jokes and enjoying her character.
Big-ass plot hole for BITR, for me - C.P.'s Kochanski should have been resurrected along with the rest of the crew. That could have been addressed with even just an offhand line, but it wasn't. There's a plotbunny - kahvi? :)
There were a lot of things I liked about Last Human over and above the Naylor-only TV show. I'm waffly about a movie - if it's like Last Human, I'd adore it. If it's more like VIII, I'm not so sure. He has a tendancy for his TV plots to get rushed, over-crammed, and fall apart - Epideme and Only The Good were the worst, I think, although Pete was up there (which is not to say that there weren't things I liked about Pete and OTG, of course, but viewed as a whole episode...).
Also, I think I've heard from just about everyone in RD at one time or another that Mr. Naylor tended to write a lot of the person into the character, so Chloe would have influenced the character of Kochanski in the shoe, while she would have been a more 'idealized' Kochanski in the book. Actually, IMO, the for boys still influenced their characters heavily in the book - maybe it's just because they had been working with Meister Naylor for so long.
