"Don't laugh at your superior officer..." Rimmer growled, grabbing Lister's wrists.

But that is the problem, if Lister was killed trying to stop Rimmer from escaping, his body would be on Starbug? Granted, they would wonder why Lister would abandon them, and that might lead to all sort of speculations. And if they find the pod they would find blod, but that would be in the stasis pod, indicating that Lister was put and later taken from the stasis pod (Rimmer would not leave blood) and would Rimmer bother with a dead body? I admit season 7 Kryten may be willing to think anything, but he is not yet that crazy in season 6, and even in season 7 there is usually a reason for his rather crazy actions (seeing Lister and Kochanski in a very romantic looking setting). Of course I really like to completely ignore later season 6 Kryten, he is just a completely different character.
At this time they have only seen Rimmer throw himself at an exploding grenade and not a scratch. Kryten knows he (with metal hands) can not penetrate the hard light (Legion). Likely they would assume that he could not be killed. They never get the to know about the dead hard-light Ace anyway. LH is last human? I have not read the books.

The assumption would have been that the altercation occurred in the pod, with Rimmer managing to launch it and getting rid of the body once it landed. They do tend to rot and go nasty, after all. I saw OOT as the episode where Kryten first started to go nutty over Lister (or started to show it) - "His favourite bowl... his little cup... the tin opener he uses to pick his ears clean with..."

Kryten never tried to lay hands (oh dear, the bunnies) on Rimmer to pull the bee; he just tried to clonk him unconscious. He probably took Legion at his word once he couldn't knock Rimmer out - but as Rimmer could be killed by the 'Bug's destruction and by a gun, Legion was likely exaggerating. It's tough to pull consistancy out of RD, as Rob and Doug didn't really seem to care. But I tiptoe through to some kind of continuity if I assume that the grenade that the Emohawk turned into was just a form, not a functional grenade - there must be limits to what a shapeshifter can do, and fragmenting over the vicinity might well be it. It didn't explode like a grenade, just made a light show, and Rimmer ended up holding the Emohawk, not bits of it. Killing isn't what the Emohawk does; I ended up thinking that the grenade was just a form meant to evoke suckable fear. Kryten is nutters, but intelligent, and I'd think he'd figure it out (perhaps together with Rimmer in his 24 hours as Ace).

There are a lot of assumptions you have to make for things that aren't made clear in RD, and those are just some of the ones that I make. Not any more valid than anyone else's, but it's the background I use to write. I write from the idea that Rimmer's hard-light drive is not all that more invulnerable than a human body, and Kryten couldn't knock him out in Legion simply because his brains were in his bee, not in his head. It's also not unreasonable to assume that Kryten would figure that out from the physical in Rimmerworld, if nothing else.

Helps a lot when you explain what you were thinking. One problem with the lack of consistency in the series is that people have to make their own assumptions to be able to write fics, it is sometimes confusing if you don't follow what they are assuming.
Anyway, it is a great story. Starting discussions is also what seems to get you guys going, so I am grabbing every opportunity ::g::

Oh, ja, I'm so pedantic - I love to hash canon. ;)

Thanks again!

In a word, they think Rimmer killed Lister because, in a way, they want to.

Sure, just say it more concisely... :p

"We'll sort it out in the dub!"
