No, he is not good at connecting with people, but he craves their company. And I think now he might be willing to make compromises to get company now, unlike the Rimmer we saw in the beginning. I dont suggest is about to get married or something, only that he wants people around him.
If he had the choice, he would have stayed and worked on what he had. But Lister gave him no choice, he might have done it for all the best reasons, but he gave Rimmer no choice but to leave.

He may crave company, but his opinion of himself is as low as ever. It is possible that he will find new company if events unfold in such a way, but for him to initiate contact with new people... I don't think so.
But then I'm really looking from my prespective. I'm quite like Rimmer in that respect, I'm afraid.

An inferiority complex is an inferiority complex, and it would only be reinforced by knowing that Lister did more than his share to help Rimmer on his way, IMO. He grew in his time as a hologram, true, but getting to know people as well as he knew the 'Buggers is a lot of work and time, and I don't know if he'll buckle down to do that with anyone else. It won't help at all that he will be Ace, and that people will have this stereotypical, shallow reaction to him... which certainly didn't help previous Aces in the make-strong-friendship-bonds department ('turned down a handful of marriage proposals'). Actually, is Lister the only person any of the Aces really hooked up with, friendly-wise? Hm....
