It's beautiful. Different indeed. More of a storytelling through another medium (at least that's how I understood it).
I loved the VIII bits in there, Lister with Rimmer, but not his Rimmer - I think it worked very well. Beautiful song. It gave the whole thing a more mellow pace, which I guess you were going for. Nice flow.
One little thing - in the contest of the vid (as I understood it) the clips of the original Ace don't really fit, especially the ones of him and Lister.

Honestly? I think it's your best work yet. And this might sound odd, considering, but great Lister-voice. This, though using a different song (and what a lovely song; must get my hands on it), is very close to a similar idea I had, but less(!!) angsty.

I think what makes this work well is that you have a good eye/ear for lyrics, and you're good at timing things, as well as finding the right clips.

I partially agree with eviltigerlily - I absolutely saw what you were going for; actually that was one of my favorite bits - looking for Rimmer in others, looking for the Ace in Rimmer. Trying to see his Rimmer in VIII Rimmer (or at least that was my interpretation); all so good. But yes, it doesn't always come across as clearly.
