Question!

Okay, so it has nothing to do with slash, but it has plenty to do with RD.

In Balance of Power, as we know, Lister takes (and fails) the Chef's Exam. But how is it assessed?

* Lister obviously can't assess his own cooking.
* I doubt the Cat would trust Lister's cooking enough to eat it, and during S1 is too self-centred to do such a thing anyway.
* Rimmer's soft-light, and wouldn't do it either.
* Holly doesn't exactly have taste buds.

So how can the exam be assessed? I mean, I would assume that at least part of the requirements for passing would be that the food was edible... but there's nobody who can judge that!

Thoughts?

...never thought about it! Maybe they can.. erm... convert the food into hologramatic form and have some long-dead chef judge it? ... ...yeah...

Ooh...

Maybe Holly had a ticky list that he used to assess Lister's performance? One which he scrapped as soon as Lister decided that curry powder was just the thing to spice up his jam tart.

Or perhaps the finished was scanned to analyse its chemical makeup and was found to be a biohazard? Either because Lister forgot to wash his hands after putting on his socks or he's the sort of guy who likes to lick the spoon while cooking.

A skutter may have come along to poke it and gotten its jaw-fingers corroded...

Maybe Lister's actually a great cook but Holly thought that giving him the power of command over Rimmer (who is already extremely powerless) would upset the balance of their interactions too much and stop Rimmer from being an effective distraction from Lister's dreary fate?

*the finished product, that is.

Well, that's why he got the boot, love. Nobody around to test on. Automatic fail.

That is hideously mean, but very RD. All of Rimmer's mucking about with Kochanski's body for naught. All of Lister's preparation for naught.

It would certainly explain the look on his face when he got the results. "No tester. Auto-fail."

This isn't really to do with your post, but I just had to comment that I've never found anyone else who'd heard of Loreena McKennet! Yay for lovely haunting Celtic music!!! I've got all her albums :-)
