Some people might call pining away for a woman who's been dead several million years sort of pathetic and creepy.

Lister prefers to think of it as 'cheerfully optimistic'.

He has to think that, so he'll forget how sort of creepy and pathetic it really is. He has to hold on to Kochanski; the idea of her, even though, in truth, he's almost forgotten what she feels like underneath his hands, against his skin, on his tongue...

He has to keep believing she's all he's got, because the alternative is unthinkable. And keeps flaring his nostrils at him in disgust.

This is a perfect example of exactly how well 100 words can be used. I was all 'Awww' for Listy, and then started laughing extremely hard when I got to the last line.
