Call me single-minded, but..

I had this bit of squeeage while watching them:

1) Rimmer remembers the polymorph.
2) He can touch.

Have we got series I-VII Rimsy back?

FANTASTIC :)

Now someone needs to write his return. Over and over again.

I noticed it was original Rimmer too!
I was watching it with the boyfriend when I suddenly realised it had to be, and I got all excited XD
I think he thinks I'm a bit mad. :)

It's all right. My grandfather thinks I'm mad just watching the show anyway.

I didn't realize it at first until I watched the clip for the second time. 'Wait a minute... nano!Rimmer never met the polymorph..'

Of course, maybe I should have guessed then when we saw him holding the car mag to read it.

Ha, now I can point and laugh at all the people in R/L who kept telling me it was Season VIII Rimmer and that he had just died again.

But if it is old Rimmer, then surely his few years as Ace would have made him a little less of a git? Or perhaps something traumatic happened to him on his adventures. FANFIC TIME!!!

Well, if he *did* come back after Kochanski left/died, my theory is some of this might just be a continuation of his original mission to keep Lister sane.

How much change has the man endured in a relatively short period (got Dwarf back, got nano!Rimmer, presumably lost both, got Dwarf back again, lost Kris again..)? It'd be nice if *something* was the same..

Oh thank you! This needed more Lister/Rimmer love (and Rimmer explaination).

I'm so glad there are fanfic writers.

That just adds more levels of confusing. On one hand, yay, original Rimmer! On the other, I want to know what happened after series VIII and "only the good..." What about nano!Rimmer?

All possibilities. The specials really raised more questions than they answered, didn't they? We definitely need a series 9.

I still feel bad for Rimmer getting told repeatedly that he's failed at keeping Lister happy. =(

Exactly.

Although...the world was all created in their minds, yeah? So somebody was thinking up Katerina, insults to Rimmer and all. (Knowing him, probably Rimmer himself)

Knowing him, probably Rimmer himself.

That'd be my first guess, actually.

[livejournal.com profile] kahvi wrote it. It's "Death" pts 1 and 2. They're on her site as well as the comm.

2) they did establish in the first episode that Red Dwarf can sustain two hard-light holograms; so being hard light is no longer dependent on first-Rimmer's specific light bee. So touching things isn't really omg!proof.
1) With the polymorph, were they referring to a third encounter with it? I can't remember the exact quote, sadly.

Given that BtE starts nine years after the end of season eight, there's plenty of time for VIII Rimmer to bind with Lister. That said, in re-watching part one Rimmer's lines about watching Lister's insides get smeared on the sonar, and "I was nearly there. That's close enough for me" made me wonder if it was the original Rimmer, come back after finding Ace a hard role to fill. Oh well, these debates are what fandom is for :)

No, but at the same time the original Red Dwarf (and Cat's story about capturing his "little fishy" during/after the events of Back to Reality and then losing it seems to imply that's where they are..) never had hard light technology. Rimmer didn't become hard light until Legion tinkered with his bee, so...?

I'm not sure if it was sloppy or a bit of genius on Doug Naylor's part to not elaborate on these things -- look how many of us are talking about it. :)

Are they on the original Red Dwarf though? I mean, my VII recollections are vague, but I recall that the original Dwarf got turned into a moon, and then back again. And given the different sets for things like the captain's office, I don't think it's unfair to assume that the nanobots made some upgrades (Hollister even mentions this, I think, in the first episode of VIII). So, given that the nanobots upgraded the ship in a non-defined way, arguments about the capabilities of the original Red Dwarf are pretty flimsy things.

I think it was probably nice for him to not have to deal with fixing and addressing all the little quirks in cannon that needed to be/should have been resolved. Though I have no doubt they'll get brought up at Dimension Jump.

Re: Call me single-minded, but..

[identity profile] nice-girls-play.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
All certainly true, and yet his mention of the polymorph still bugs me -- because as far as we know at this point, they've only had two encounters with it, both back before Rimmer left to become Ace.

I think there's more than enough implication that it could be either one. We're all really speculating on what's *not being said* and I doubt Doug Naylor can be prodded to reveal more, unless a new series or film is commissioned. Maybe someone at DJ will ask Chris Barrie. I have a feeling he'd be more forthcoming.
