Pairing: Lister/Rimmer
Wordcount: 528
Warnings: Basically...500 words of lovely angst. Character "death" (it's all relative, I suppose).
Notes: I am obviously a very mean person who likes to torture characters. Don't hate me too much. <3
Rimmer stumbled into the darkened bunkroom noisily. Lister sat up, jolted from his sleep. He didn’t recognize the silhouette against the unlit gray backdrop of his walls. His heart thundered in his chest.
“Lights!” he yelled, while scrambling into a standing position.
The bunkroom was suddenly lit. Lister was speechless.
Ace was leaned against the table, panting hard, his hand on his midriff. No shiny jacket, only a ripped white t-shirt tucked into silver trousers, over black boots. His wig was askew. His eyes fluttered, trying to look up.
Lister moved forward to pull the wig off. Ace still wouldn’t (couldn’t?) look him in the face. He gently lifted the other man’s chin and looked into his face.
“Is it you?” he questioned, his eyes narrowed in assessment.
“…Yes…” Rimmer panted.
Suddenly his surprise guest’s distress was much more compelling. This was his Rimmer. Oh, god, what had he done now?
“What ‘appened, man?” Lister asked in a tone of raising panic as he looked over the hologram. He now noticed how the other man’s legs shook with the effort to hold himself up, and the old “H” was flickering on his forehead.
“…Doesn’t matter…light bee…” Rimmer continued, breathily.
“Wha’? Lemme see, maybe…”
“Can’t.” Rimmer said with finality, in a pained voice.
“But…” Lister began to argue.
“No…listen…I’ve only got…a few minutes, I think…”
Lister’s eyes traitorously stung with tears, though his mind refused to believe what he was hearing. He said nothing.
“I’m…a coward after all, Listy,” the injured man said with a sad smile. “I should have used my…ah!...last moments to…recruit a new Ace. But…I couldn’t.”
A hologrammatic hand shakily moved to Lister’s cheek, and weakly touched it.
“Once I…figured I was going to…switch off…I decided to be…selfish.”
The hand trembled and fell as Rimmer leaned further over the table, unable to maintain standing.
Lister grabbed for the hand and pulled him upright again, supporting his hard-light body with his other arm, in an embrace.
Rimmer sighed painfully. Maybe it was the experience of dying (again), or maybe it was the difficulty of saying his next words.
“See there’s something I want from you…a last request, you could say. Something…I’ve always wanted…to do. And this…this is my…last chance.”
“What is it?” Lister asked, in a whisper. This was so surreal.
Rimmer looked like he was about to collapse. Whatever it was, he needed to say it quickly, that much was obvious. But the words weren’t forthcoming.
“Say it, Rimmer!” Lister demanded, suddenly very afraid. He felt his grip on the hologram wavering. He was going to switch into soft-light…or just disappear. “I need to know!”
Rimmer forced the words out in a sob.
“Let me…kiss you…”
Mind blank, Lister could only agree to it. This he could grant. Without question.
His lips reached for Rimmer’s and they met, softly. The malfunctioning hard-light tingled against his skin. He did not pull back from the sensation, but pushed further into it.
A tiny whimper escaped from Rimmer’s throat. He ran his tongue along Lister’s lower lip, tasting a hint of spice. And home.
Then there was only air, and a thud, as the light bee hit the ground.

^_^ Fine by me! Should I be awaiting it in my inbox sometime soon, or are you angsting over its long drawn out birth? ;D (hahahahahaaa-so intended)

Possibly today, that's the hope.
But then I do struggle up until about 1,000 words on anything...
after which point, it's either finished, or I can zoom through to the end quickly. So my *plan* is to have part 1 done in a few hours.
Let's see if I can stick to that goal.
ps. your puns. ;)

What pangs you go through for your little loves!
'Course, they never come when expected huh? Always so very early or anxiously late..
I'll keep an eye out! Not like I do anything else but watch my inboxs really..
(I hope I never lose my pun-niness xDD)
