(trying to get back into the swing of writing, after a noticeable departure. not sure what my point is with this drabble, perhaps you can discern more from it than i am able to)

 

“What’s the matter with you?” Lister asked, holding his hand against the guitar strings to stop vibrations of a dubious E-chord.  He’d been playing for almost twenty minutes and Rimmer had yet to make one rude comment, put in earplugs, or otherwise appear annoyed by his amateurish strumming. He hadn’t moved at all, but still lay on his bunk, hands behind his head, staring upwards, unblinking.

Rimmer just sighed.

“Eh?” Lister implored, when no answer was forthcoming. He was genuinely curious now.

“You’re my reason for being.” Rimmer said, defeated.

Lister hoped his cheeks didn’t show the flush he felt.

Sounds to me like at this point, he's accepted the fact that he was only brought back because Holly knows he's the one to keep Lister sane... and once again, he's stuck in the crap position of not existing for himself. He hates it, but he is, as always, helpless to do anything about it.
