Article about 'how to save RD' - including L/R!

Picked this up on my Google alerts. The blog Toplessrobot wrote 8 ways Red Dwarf can be saved, and #4 is "Focus on the Lister/Rimmer dynamic (with clip from 'Marooned'), and #3 "Get Rid of Kochanski". A teeny part of me agrees with #1 "Let it die", but I'm too selfish; I want to see the boys again.

The dynamic between Lister and Rimmer was the heart of the show, for me. It wasn't there in BtE and it changed too much in S8 for me.

I don't think the show can get the visibility in the US (#7) that Doctor Who has at the moment; BtE didn't do it any favors in that regard. If it ends up being a proper series based around the characters, and the writers don't try to shoehorn in an overall thread like they did with BtE, I think it could work. *fingers crossed*

I can see why people didn't like S8 when they say they don't, but I did. To me, Lister and Rimmer still aren't the best of friends, but they have an alliance and get on better than they used to - which makes sense if you think nano-Rimmer was constructed on data Starbug had on what he was like before he went off to be Ace, which means his development would have been preserved. Including his relationship with Lister. They can still be antagonistic and get along more often than they used to.

As for Kochanski, I don't dislike her in 7 as much as many fans. She IS a different Kris than the original; I always thought that was the point, and a huge reason she and Lister never got together, that they recognized it wouldn't work - hence the reason adding another human to "the last human" didn't bother me, either. Consider that in her dimension, Kochanski is the last human, too. (Plus, Lister's already taken. ;-) ) I actually sort of liked Chloe's take on trying to fill Rimmer's seat; she never threatened my enjoyment of the show, because Barrie was good enough that NOBODY could replace him. I didn't like the latter half of S7 because it seemed too serious and dark and less fun, but that was all about the lack of Rimmer, not the addition of Kochanski.

I'm actually halfway of the school that says "let it die" is the best option for the series. I want to see new episodes because I'm selfish and want to see the guys together again, for bad or good (which is why I don't mind BTE as much as some fans), but I recognize that all good things must end.

I agree on the "let it die" motion. Of course I love the guys, but I'd be worried too much about my expectations.

Maybe the boys could work on a different project together.

I'm one of those freakish people who liked S8, liked Chloe!Kochanski, and still wants to see new episodes. I think I may be in some degree of denial, but eh. I've been in this fandom forever, it's my baby, I don't want it to go away.

The show, for me, hasn't jumped the shark yet. Once it makes that major mistake it should go. I admit, it's one of the few things I can watch on the telly, I'm bloody selfish and I want more. I waited for ever for BtE and I wasn't disappointed because I didn't set my expectations too high. I never do. I'm not setting them too high with the new series either.

As long as it's funny and the guys wanna do it, let the dwarf go on.

I admit part of me is worried the new series might be below par, but that's outweighed by the desire to see the boys together again in a proper series, *with* a studio audience to lift the mood.

I don't get the "they're too old" argument, considering how good they all still look. I think that mainly comes from men who grew up with the show, identify with the characters and subconsciously don't want to be reminded of their own aging.

Re Kochanski, I don't mind her, but she works better as an unattainable goal than as a major character (see the ending of BTE). That's onscreen - I actually think the best version of her is in Doug Naylor's "Last Human".
