Craig Charles on I'm A Celebrity!!!

You may have already seen this news elsewhere by now, but it looks pretty certain that Craig will be venturing into the Australian jungle for this years round of hysterics and minor celeb torture.

I've got to say off the bat that I am emphatically not a fan of this show and will be relying on most of you to tell me what's happening out there. (The bush tucker trials make me want to hurl).

I'm a little surprised that Craig agreed to do it, for various reasons, but I can understand why he did. However unpleasant the experience may be, there is no doubt that it will be well-paid and it's great publicity (if it goes well, of course). His comments suggest that he may possibly have been under a little pressure from ITV to do it, but I don't think they would have outright forced him. He is a man who likes a challenge and he has a competitive streak a mile wide, so perhaps he genuinely wanted to see how he'd get on. Also, he may still feel he has something to prove to people re his addiction problems. If he can stick it out with no cigarettes, booze or drugs for a few weeks then it will do wonders for his reputation. But given the very delicate relationship he has with the tabloids, he will need to seriously watch his step. One comment, one toe out of line, and they will gleefully tear him to shreds.

It's a dangerous position for him to be in, but obviously I wish him well. But, aside from anything else, it does make me wonder if those slightly bitchy comments deleted from Chris Barrie's website a while ago may have been directed at Craig after all...

That last thought crossed my mind. :| However! I think around that time, all the cast (including Craig) were still saying that Series XI would be filming, er, now. So who knows.

This might make me sound like an overly defensive fan, but my theory is that he had a hole in his schedule where they'd been expecting to film Series XI, it got put back for some reason and he thought he might as well as do this, especially as it's apparently not the first time they've offered. Or maybe I'm an overly defensive fan. ;)

I hate the thought of Bushtucker trials but my Mum watches it so I guess I could record highlights and fast-forward when necessary. :)

Maybe he'll seize the chance to quit smoking. ;)

I hope you're right, it would make me sad to think that they'd fallen out over this, but that comment Chris made about modern tv shows that he would be 'embarrassed' to be seen in does strike a little bit close to home in this case to be a coincidence. When it comes to nasty, trashy reality tv 'I'm A Celebrity' is probably the worst offender of the lot. I dont watch it, but I know well enough that it can be pretty damn sadistic.

Oh well - if nothing else, Bobby and Danny's tweets on the matter are bound to be entertaining!

Oh yes, I hadn't thought of that. I suppose it could still be Chris having a general moan about the state of modern TV in frustration at how long it's taking Series XI to be officially commissioned. He does seem like a bit of an old fogey in a charming way. :)

Or maybe I just like the nicest explanation for everything. I'm idealistic like that. :p

If Craig had to do a reality show, I'd have preferred "Strictly". Far more civilised. ;)

Oh, I don't think the bitchy comments were directed at Craig, or at least not entirely, but I'm not going to say why I don't think that. Maybe someday. :-)

Realty TV in general makes me hurl. Give me a talent show where someone can show off their singing or playing or dancing or the like, and I'm OK with it. But something like this, Big Brother, all of it ... it's just a way for networks to make big bucks without having to pay out as much as they would for a fictional-story TV show. Which is of course anathema for someone who writes for a living. Ugh.

Yeah, I feel much the same. The thing which struck me even more than the yucky stuff was when Craig said he wouldn't be able to read. Barbarians. ;)

Given Craig's daredevil nature and the no doubt generous financial incentive, I'm not surprised he's apparently doing this. I say "apparently" because every year at least one celeb pulls out before they even start. It's like a ritual. :p

I remember they tried to bring the show over here to the US years ago and it didn't last very long. I think it was on for maybe a season or two before it was dropped. I think I watched one episode and called it quits. Would anyone care to refresh me on the format?

Oh dear. He did know then. Hmmm...less said about it the better then maybe.

I was just reading an article that said the trials are going to be worse than ever this year - not just yucky but really intense. Including one of being buried alive, which made me fret because although Craig has a reputation for being fearless he has said that he suffers from claustrophobia. I really, really hate this show.

On the upside, while we're talking tackiness, there is a strong likelihood that we might get some packet action. There's always a silver lining.

Somehow I don't think we'll get anything like the loving close-ups of Myleene Klass showering in her bikini though. Double standards.

Perhaps I'm a hopeless optimist (like Lister) but this could actually be good for Series XI, in the sense that investors are more likely to fund a show starring someone who's just raised his profile significantly.

I've never seen the show before, being in America, but I'm going to watch it for Craig, and I know a lot don't like the show. But it's Craig! And Robert's tweets about it are so sweet. :P
