I just got ahold of Backwards and read it last night. And now...

I'm having a plotbunny involving Rimmer and a spikey hooked Cat penis. Yeeks.

I really have to say, after reading it, I wonder about what Grant and Naylor each brought to the series. One of my main problems with VII is that many of the episodes seem to be... not-tightly-written; things go by quickly and aren't tied together well (the latter half of Epideme particularly), and that's exactly what Backwards had - that tight tie-together of events (that I think was best, TV-series-wise, in Gunmen, although Tikka was good in that department, too). It's very well written. I was actually laughing out loud at parts of it while I was sitting in bed reading it.

And it's really goddam dark, thematically. Man.

Ja... my bunny was a nasty one with aganoids and non-con, and I'm still squicked I wrote a non-con with Lister's lust monster, so dunno if I'll follow through. :p

Backwards is good, but I prefer Last Human. I think you'll see why when you read it, even if you end up not agreeing. :)

Ja, I'm still waiting for it. The local bookstores don't have either Backwards or The Last Human, so I ordered both from Amazon, and got a note that Last Human won't be shipped until mid-March. Grumble.

Backwards is really dark. I was rather upset by the time I got to the end of it, in the way that i get when I read things that make me sad.

Not only do you get dead!Kryten and dead!Rimmer, but very messily and nastily dead!Rimmer. :(

Oh yeah. I think I whimpered while I was reading that. I got funny looks. Which is probably why I don't read in public anymore. Noone seems to appreciate my reactions to what I'm reading.

That's what annoyed me the most about the book. I just didn't see the point in killing them, especially Rimmer in that way.

Oh! I liked that! *is as surprised as Cat and Lister* Maybe it's that I... Um... Sort of have a thing for first-time/innocent sex. Ahem.

And I learned a new word - undetumescing. So good all round then. :)

Oooo, Backwards fic, fun. I haven't read The Last Human yet but Backwards is so far my favourite of the series, it was the point where I began to take Red Dwarf seriously and Rimmer became my favourite character.

You have to cringe at what the agoniods were planning to do with metal cocktail umbrellas.

I don't even have the anatomy in question, and I cringed!

One of the bits where I laughed out loud was when he was trying to read the space corps manual after being joshed by Cat and Lister, and the display indicated (something like, pulling this out of derriere):

3(a): ...if the officer in question has not countermanded the indicative concern in a timely fashion, and if, in consideration of the pending consequences, the senior officer in command has not effectively established a reinterating counterrecommendation in the context of the established directive...

and Rimmer reads:

That part was fantastic XD and so very Rimmer like.

One of the bits I really liked was Holly's onion conundrum and the prologue, midlogue and epilogue of course :)
