Resolution Of The Series VIII Cliffhanger

After the joke in "The Beginning" I thought this was out of the question, but a Twitter exchange between Doug and Kill Crazy actor Jake Wood today seems to indicate otherwise.

For those who don't know, Jake Wood is a successful soap star in the UK and also recently won Strictly Come Dancing, so I doubt he's just touting for work without having been approached.  Apparently he's taking a year off from "Eastenders".

So if Kill Crazy may be making a reappearance, I don't see how that could be done without explaining what happened at the end of Series VIII.  Personally, I could have happily never found out, but if we get that I will be intrigued to see what Doug comes up with.

So what's everyone else's thoughts?  Would you be interested to possibly see a flashback with Hollister and maybe Rimmer-as-Ace saving the day?  Or is your instinctive reaction the same as I've seen elsewhere, along the lines of "Oh God, no!  Stay away from Series VIII!" ;)

Intriguing! Now I'm nervous because I'm pretty attached to the "Our Rimmer came back to save everyone" ending (not sure where I stand on what happened to NanoRimmer — I hope he lived happily ever after in the mirror universe?), and if they go a different route...:/ Well, I'll live.

Craig did say that in (one of) the movie script(s), the kidney stone operation was performed on Hollister. Maybe the plan has always been for the Dwarfers to find survivors, although presumably not the entire resurrected crew.

It does seem a fairly rich vein of comedy / drama for Doug to mine, so he couldn't really be blamed for going back to it. It's interesting because a lot of casual fans are always asking for a resolution whereas hardcore fans tend to be more in the "Don't touch it with a bargepole" camp.

Although to be fair someone did ask about it at DJ, as well as the possible return of Ace, and got the usual non-committal brush-off. Doug did say that he felt the reality might not live up to people's expectations.

It's possible that Jake simply heard about the two new series and felt nostalgic, I suppose. We won't know for a while.

I said long ago my take is that every episode takes place in a parallel universe to the previous one(s) and that's how they should be viewed to preserve good humor.

I understand that approach but perhaps I'm too literal - I don't like the idea of each episode having a different crew because then none of the bonding which happens over the course of the series is actually relevant. :/

Or am I being dense and missing your point?

I'm not one of those who gets too hung up on continuity, but when you're writing fic you have to consider it sometimes.

But, each universe has its OWN previous bonding moments. Clearly it's working as evidenced by random bits of affection and tolerance in different episodes. *G*

I think that was one of Fia's when we were both trying to write rarepairs. I dropped a mention of it into Floor 13 but it was only in passing. Try looking for 'Dervla Nightshade'.

All that brings up is her old FFnet account with an announcement that she's abandoning it. I did try Fiareynne which brought up a couple of RD fics here on LJ, but no Cat / Kill Crazy.

It's OK. I was just mildly curious. :)

Thanks a lot for looking. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this but I'm not actually a member of the RDSS as I got the impression that it was defunct and had been replaced by this comm. So I'll need you to approve my membership before I can read that.

I could have SWORN that I approved it as soon as it came through, but then I got a reminder message last night saying I had a pending action, and sure enough it was your membership.

Yes, Kill Crazy was one of the least objectionable aspects of VIII IMO. As has been said elsewhere, it's not so much the character as the era of the show which he represents which is giving some people doubts.

But we don't actually know that Kill Crazy is coming back. Doug could have been just being polite and keeping his options open. :)

They may well have been, but I wanted to know how attached people were to their head canons. Also I've been wondering if Doug's original plan for part of Series X to involve finding a previously unexplored part of the ship might be revived.

Oh, good grief. I just had a ridiculous idea where it turns out that Kochanski's been living there all the time. With Kill Crazy whom she's managed to domesticate. Cue instant jealousy from Lister even though he may not have anything to be jealous about (or possibly any right to be).
