Popcorn
Title: Popcorn
Summary: Lister spends some time with Cat. Slashy drablet.
Rating: PG
Author: Ellie ET
Disclaimer: If I really, truly owned Red Dwarf, this would have happened a long time ago. (There’s no cartoon-bashing intended, either).
I was working on another, longer version, but it fell apart, so I settled with this version instead. This is dedicated to a fellow fanfiction.net user by name of Zombie Kitty for her reviews regarding previous C/L fics and although I haven’t told her personally, I’m deeply grateful for the encouragement. Thanks, ZK!
“So, what are we watching?” Cat accepted the glass of milk that Lister handed him, and took a sip as he watched the human stick a video into the VCR that he had ‘borrowed’ to furnish his cabin.
“Just some old cartoons – don’t worry, there’s nothing like ‘Tom and Jerry’s Grandchildren’ in here,” Lister replied, taking up the controls and pressing the play button. “I know you hate those kind of things.”
“Trouble is, there’s too many of those toons around anyway,” Cat muttered somewhat grudgingly, as Lister sat down next to him on Rimmer’s bunk. Lister nudged him, and the two then hushed as the first episode started.
“Ah, you gotta love these,” Cat murmured, as Lister offered him a small packet of some of the popcorn that he had been saving in the fridge.
“Yeah, classics,” Lister replied absent-mindedly, watching the screen.
“No, I mean this.” Cat gave the popcorn packet he was holding a shake. “Intergalactic Popcorn – All Flavours! You’ve got good taste.”
The cartoon video proved to be quite a success. It was one of several old tapes that had arrived in the mail-pod a few years previously, and Lister had claimed every single one. It was quite startling to think just how many crew-members had adored shows like ‘Teenage Computerised Ninja Frogs’ and ‘Biker Mice From Mars: The Next Generation,’ prompting their friends and relatives back on Earth to deliver various videos via the pod.
“I wish Rimfire’s son would stop quoting his ‘dear old brown-furred dada’,” Cat commented about two episodes later, as he sat with one leg crossed over the other.
“That’s Modo’s family for ya,” Lister muttered back. “Hey, open up.” He held up a piece of popcorn that had a pinkish tinge to its colour. Cat obediently opened his mouth and Lister threw it inside. Chewing it, Cat grinned.
“Strawberry flavour popcorn!” he mumbled, his mouth full. “Thanks.”
“Here, there’s some milk-flavoured ones left that I don’t like.” Lister held out the rest of his packet and Cat accepted, eyes wide with delight as though Lister had just offered him a new extensive wardrobe. Taking the packet from Lister’s outstretched hand, he rested his head on Lister’s shoulder and Lister automatically put an arm around him.
“Do you still think Wilma Flintstone is sexy?” the feline asked suddenly.
Lister glanced sideways at him.
“I used to.” He felt Cat shrug and snuggle into his side.
“Me too.”
“Good.” Lister started to run a hand up and down Cat’s back, eyes still fixed to the screen as Cat snuck an arm around his waist, feeling the warm weight of Lister’s gentle fingers even through his dark jacket.
With a rather lazy sigh, Lister glanced at his watch. “Half-six. You want to grab an early dinner, or would you rather - ?” He was cut off when Cat wrapped the other arm around him, shutting his eyes briefly. The human shrugged, smiled slightly and gave him a quick kiss on the head.
“Fancy some more popcorn?”
Fin.
