Title: Fresh Meat

Notes: Drabble - 100 words, exactly.



Rimmer sipped his drink in the bar outside the JMC recruitment facility.

"Fresh meat, huh?" Asked the man who had given him the drink.

"Just signed up," Rimmer mumbled. Alcohol warmed his esophagus all the way down, and as Rimmer looked at the man - tan, athletic, promising smile - the heat pooled into his groin. At once, Rimmer realized two things. One, he fancied men, which was depraved and filthy, and two, no one in this place cared.

This wasn't Io. He'd be allowed to be gay here. He could...

Yelping, Rimmer leapt from his chair, running out into the darkness.

Oh wow, I love this. I love this sentence best:

I agree with Rachel. Filthy.

It all explains why he's so hung up on telling Lister he had heterosexual intercourse. Very straight heterosexual intercourse. Just like straight men have.

I feel a bit shy commenting here since I'm new (to the comm and RD), but it was too good for shyness to stop me. It's been ages since I've read such an effective drabble. It doesn't just pack a punch, but it tells such a rich and complete story as well. You picked the absolute perfect details to make it work. Love it. ♥

Thank you very much - I love writing drabbles. They're like little word-puzzles, trying to make it work within 100 words and 100 words exactly. Or kind of like poetry, but for lazy people, like me. ;)

Ah, I know what that's like. Well, not with Latin, specifically, but I feel you.

I always find it hard to pick individual stories. My favorite authors are roadstergal, smaych and madlovescience - all their stuff is good. There isn't much of an archive system here, I'm afraid. Is there anything in particular you prefer? Angst, PWP, settings, etc?

Oh, I think I've read a bit of roadstergal's stuff already and liked it. Just, it was before I'd finished the series (er, a few days ago), and I kept getting confused. I ought to take another look. XD

Hm... I am most fixated on Rimmer--the original one, though all the other ones running about are all right--and Rimmer/Lister. I do enjoy angst and dark stuff quite a lot; especially things that really get into and test who the character is.

It's okay if you can't think of any specific ones to link, though! I'm mostly feeling out what the fandom's like (and read awesome fic as well), so I'm sure going through the fics of the folks you listed (and you) will be helpful already.

If I may self-pimp slightly, I have a soft spot for "Perfectly Straight" - a story co-written by roadstergal and myself. It's not the best thing either of us have written, but it's certainly the finniest, by FAR. It's a good introduction to the fandom, methinks!
