Okay so looking at the kink meme requests made me want to ask this. Respond for what you personally think. Feel free to elaborate in comments. I apologise in advance for the limitedness of the poll options; I wanted to keep it simple to get a general trend.

(My personal tip is that the voting trend will be towards Lister being sub/masochist and Rimmer being Dom/sadist. I look forward to seeing the results.)

I'm not really surprised by these results. :D

IMO, the whole Dom/sub dynamic would not make sense to Lister. He'd giggle at it, shake his head, and move on. I'm sure he'd try to go along with it if a partner was submissive or dominant, but he'd have a hard time with it, especially being dominant or sadistic (in BDSM terms). I guess you could classify that as being switchy, but I'd rather say "other", because, again, I don't see him as being part of any such dynamic.

And honestly, Rimmer being cracktastically submissive is smegging canon.

TL;DR - I can see a really confused, annoyed and conflicted sub OR dom Lister, but there is no way in Hades I could ever imagine a dominant Rimmer. Though, I suppose, I could certainly see him TRYING to be dominant. (Again, that's pretty much canon.)

Also; a submissive Lister wouldn't really be submissive, because for that to work at all, he'd have to top from below, because Rimmer would have no idea what he's doing. (Yes, I think about this too much. :p)

Low Rimmer does say a lot about Rimmer's psyche, but I've always seen it as more of a manifestation of his kinky side, rather than a dominant side.

I'll be he wishes he were dominant, though!

Oh hell yes. There's absolutely endless fic potential yet to be tapped in this fandom. That's what I love about it so much; it's ostensibly just four guys (or three guys and a girl and a curry shop in space, but with the great writers we have here there's so, so much that can be done. And then if you throw book-canon in as well that only adds to the fun. This is why this comm is doing so well so long after the show finished (although yes, there was a surge of new members when BTE came out); there's just so much in there to write about and think about that I think we'll be going strong for quite some time.

Can ya tell I feel all kind of maternal about this fandom? It's sad, innit, but since starting the RDSS on yahoo groups and then having it sort of half migrate here (there's a fair bit of crossover in membership, but not everyone who's here is there and vice versa), and watching the numbers grow, I've just always been so pleased that I got the ball rolling. I mean, obviously if I hadn't started the RDSS someone else would have eventually, but I still feel very proud when I look at all the people here and still on yahoo and think back to when it was me and three other people and a handful of fics on FF.N.
