Summary: Several things happened to Dave Lister in his formative years that changed the course of his life. At age ten, Lister discovered the wonders of the male penis and the pleasure it could bring him.

Lister is an unusual character, in that you don't often see someone who is so 'cute' who can also be extremely sexy - people tend to fall into one category or the other. Similarly, he's got that intriguing mix of hardness and softness about him. He can be tough, demanding and self-assured but underneath that he has a real vulnerability too. It's why I've always found him the most interesting character, particularly sexually.

In terms of the underage stuff, well...as you say it is canon. As someone who was also an early developer it doesn't seem too out of place to me. I know from my diaries that I was having fully-fledged sexual fantasies and masturbating at age 11 (although I made a decision fairly young that I didn't want to have sex until I was eighteen and I stuck to that). I can totally see Lister as the kind of boy who would have a go at seducing his social worker :-)

I totally agree with your perceptions of Lister. The adorable baby-face combined with the confidence and sex-appeal he has is a rare and intriguing combination. He's a fascinating character.

It was good to get some backstory on these versions of Rimmer and Lister. I'm still very curious to see how we're going to go from this to Emperor Rimmer!

I'd planned the backstory almost from the beginning, but Lister wouldn't tell me what it was until I was midway through chapter 2, and that's where I got stuck for months. I'm making good progress now, and learning to balance writing and the rest of my 'real' life so I don't neglect either one. I tend to focus on ONE THING, aka writing, and it consumes my life. I live inside the story headcanon so I'm distracted all the time, and cannot concentrate on anything else. I guess I understand obsession and singlemindedness after all :)

Yes I'd seen that picture of him before, but it still makes me squee every time I see it. Chris Barrie's hair was a thing of beauty.

I think we all have a similar idea of Lister, in that he's very open and loving and generally unrepressed about sexual things. It wasn't until I met Craig last year that I thought of Lister as sexy, though. Lister has had moments, definitely, but experiencing that charisma in person, with that laugh and that dirty twinkle in his eye, I transferred that over to Lister (which explains my turn-around in being able to write from Lister's POV so easily). Now I can't seem to turn him off...

It didn't occur to me that readers might have issues with a 12 year old having sex. Rather silly, I know, but in this story context, it was just who Lister was. He loved sex, therefore he had sex, but he was smart enough not to flaunt it in the adult's faces. And Lister clearly choose it for himself as something he wanted, yet not quite mature enough to handle the more hard-core feelings that came with Rimmer's introduction.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I've found a new way to have fun with Lister....*cracks knuckles and opens Word* Where was I?
