I know it's horrible but part of what I wanted to do in this fic was really highlight the difference between consensual BDSM and rape/abuse. It was something I was going to address in the first Fifty Shades fic but ended up cutting because it was getting so ridiculously long and I wanted to (no pun intended) tie things up.
In the scene with Murray I tried to draw subtle parallels between things that we've seen between Rimmer and Lister over the two series, things that they've done/said, to show how important context (and consent) really is in this area.
I did see the warnings so I wasn't completely unprepared. I don't want to sound angry with you - you can obviously write whatever you want. :)
It's just that - odd as this may sound given the content of these fics - I was enjoying them as escapist fantasy and now that's been shattered. That doesn't mean I'll stop reading - I doubt I could if I tried.
I can understand you wanting to do that given how unpopular the original "50 Shades" is on Tumblr. Those are important issues to highlight. :)
I did notice those parallels and think you've done a wonderful job of showing what you wanted to show. :(
And having read the first story and felt Lister's pain, I feel so torn about the woman. Obviously what she wants to do is never the answer, but still. (Based on what she said, she seems to have the sequence of events slightly wrong? Maybe that's part of it.)
Oh, just where she says "You stole him from me" -- if my understanding of the timeline is correct, Rimmer dumped her a couple months before he even met Lister. Then again, I guess that could be how she perceives it in her twisted mind.
Yeah my thoughts were that she was absolutely destroyed when Rimmer dumped her. I don't think she's thinking rationally in any sense. Especially given what she's resigned to do. Certainly not the thoughts of a rational person!
Ah, I see. Yes, Rimmer had already finished with her before he met Lister but given the speed with which Rimmer and Lister's relationship progressed she suspects otherwise. Also, it's more that she feels Lister stole the life that she should have had. After all that time of doing whatever was asked of her, she feels like she's the one who deserves it. Of course, the irony is that it's also the very reason Rimmer got tired of her.
Makes sense. I had always wondered what was going through Rimmer's mind when Lister told him he loved him right before and after they split up, and her story provides some clarification -- Lister wasn't the first to develop deeper feelings. :( It's so sad all around...
I am literally on the edge of my seat here. LITERALLY. This is such riveting stuff.
Lister though. I didn't want that to happen to Lister. Gut-wrenching, but quite understanding in the narrative. I can totally understand why you went there.
Just curious, I have never read any of the 50 Shades books and I'm wondering how closely this whole story is following those books? I know the first one was very much a parody of sorts, but is this following the sequels in any way or is it's own animal with it's own storyline?
I never read the sequels - I got to the end of the first one and decided I really didn't care what happened next - but I think I read somewhere that she does get kidnapped. That's not why I went in that direction with this though, it just seemed to tie in neatly with the themes from the first story and what I wanted to look at in this one.

I hate/love you.
Also, you might want to change the warnings?

OTOH, I love the characterisation of Howard. Puts me in mind of a spiv in a 50s British film.
