Title: Really
Summary: Set during the episode ‘Dimension Jump,’ just before Ace arrives at Starbug. Mildly slashy C/L drablet.
Rating: PG
Author: EllieET
Spoilers: ‘Dimension Jump.’

I just typed this up this morning because although ‘Dimension Jump’ was quite slashy L/R-wise, I couldn’t fail to notice the C/L cosiness of the episode and finally acted on it today. Quite short – nothing more than a drabble/ficlet. Enjoy.

“Kryten, we’ve got no choice. If I don’t get out there and fix the engine, we’re sea soup.” Lister knelt down next to Cat, but continued to glare at the mechanoid.

“Sir, I must protest!” Kryten cried. “It’s practically suicide!”

“What’s stopping him?” Rimmer muttered from the corner, before disappearing into the cockpit. Kryten sighed, and turned away to rummage in the first-aid kit. Lister took up Cat’s hand.

“You’re not seriously gonna go out there, are you, buddy?” Cat asked, turning his head weakly.

“I have to, man,” Lister said, lowering his voice so that only Cat could hear him. “We’re stranded and you’re injured – and besides, I’m not that scared.”

“Listen, buddy,” Cat whimpered. “Chances being we’re probably not gonna get out of this, I’m sorry about the two-faced jab.”

“Don’t worry about it, man,” Lister assured.

“Really?”

“Really. And while we’re at it, I’m sorry about your suit and your leg.” Lister eyed Cat’s broken leg, knowing full well that Cat didn’t remotely care as much about his injury as he did his ruined trousers.

“Oh, my suit,” Cat whined, following Lister’s gaze. “If we weren’t already doomed, I’d kill myself.”

Lister rolled his eyes and shifted slightly closer to Cat. “Don’t talk like that, man. I’ll just go out there and get the engine fixed, regardless of weather. Then I’ll get back in here, and we’ll set off for Red Dwarf, yeah?”

“…Really?”

“Really.” Lister stared down at Cat, a strange feeling bubbling in his chest. It was so strange to see his normally energetic friend injured like this in the middle of a crisis and Lister found himself wishing dearly that Cat hadn’t been so seriously hurt when they had crashed; he would then have been able to hold out more hope for them. Lister had a way of thinking that if Cat was alright, then they would all be alright. Now though, no matter what he told the feline, he knew that the chances of their survival were quite slim. But there was one thing Lister was still absolutely sure of.

“I’m gonna stick right here,” he whispered to Cat. “I’m gonna be here with you all the way, right by your side, come what may. OK?”

“Really?” Cat blinked up at him.

“Really. I promise.” Lister raised Cat’s hand to his mouth and pressed his lips against the palm in a gentle kiss.

“OK.” Cat glanced up at the ceiling, his head swaying slightly. It seemed the pain of his broken leg was finally catching up with him. Sympathetically, Lister reached out with one hand, and stroked Cat’s cheek lightly with his fingertips. What was a promise if you didn’t keep it?

At that moment, they heard the airlock clunk open. Lister glanced up warily and immediately let go of Cat’s hand before standing up, albeit nervously, to face whatever intruder had ambushed the ship. He blinked when the stranger entered the compartment.

“Name’s Commander Rimmer. Arnold Rimmer.”
