“Machine in the Ghost”

Summary: The crew gets more than they bargain for when they find a derelict in deep space. Can be read as a standalone, or as the continuation of Urgent, which itself juts out of a short earlier series I wrote. (In other words, do what you want, LOL.)
Spoilers: The entire TV series, some borrowed elements from the novels.

Lister was on edge and not in the mood to trade barbs. Rimmer wondered if he should instigate conversation a few times, just to take Lister’s mind off the next substance he was likely to be bathed in.

Set in September 2174 on the Saturnian moons of Calypso, Telesto and Tethys, in this open-ended AU Arnold Rimmer, aged 25, has made the decision to quit the Space Corps and pursue an arts degree. In this part he meets his new roommate, Dave Lister, an engineering student with a lax attitude towards unimportant things like classes.

Just so you know, this was well and truly inspired by veronica_rich and metalkatt, but since I started it absolutely months and months ago I can't remember what the smeg they said to inspire it.

These are the first two bits. I don't know how many bits there will be, but I do have story notes about what Kochanski, McGruder, Todhunter and Hollister, amongst others, are also doing in this AU, so there will be more at some point, and of course there will eventually be actual slash, not just pre-slash. I just couldn't leave these bits unposted any longer after I finished 'Life Drawing' at five o'clock this morning.
