The Red Dwarf was a 30-year-old Jaeger hauled out of service thanks to a shortage of ready, new units. All the other pilots had expectations for far better vehicles and refused to hook up to its antiquated systems; only Rimmer and Lister seemed able to get it to do more than lurch and wave.
