It's so true. I think I can understand where it comes from, though, for Rimmer it's easier to shut down and burn bridges than to deal with people. If I had Rimmer's family, I'd probably do the same. Lister might have had the misfortune of being orphaned, having his adopted parents die, and losing his grandmother in a few short years, but at least he can say that every last one of them loved him while he still had them.
