Doug Naylor's "Last Human"

I just finished "Last Human", after wanting to read it for years. Despite its many faults, I really felt like out of all the many versions of Dwarf out there, it gives the most emotionally satisfying ending to the series. (Yeah, I totally teared up a little. <3)

So, the reason for this post is that I've read a number of fics in "Last Human" continuity before, and now that I've actually read the book, I want to reread them, but of course now I can't find most of them. So if any of you are more organized than me and can point me to some, please do! This post can be our little LH masterlist, whoo.

I'll admit... I welled up at the ending too. I felt it was the most 'science-fiction-y' out of the four and was surprised how emotional it could turn out (I haven't delved into sci-fi much as a whole so my reaction could just be down to my lack of knowledge for it).

I think there are a few LH fics on fanfiction.net (which I haven't read yet, though).

Oh yes, I definitely liked Last Human and the ending is tissue-worthy - although M.M. (coded in case of spoilers) was so bloody vanilla two-dimensional I wanted to kick him.

Um no, he's in it from about half way through so not really. They could have made a lot more of his character but it doesn't stop the ending being poignant.

I either haven't read it or it's been so long I've completely forgotten it - at any rate, I read something elsewhere that makes me think I know who this is, so I'll leave that at that. *G* Point is, it's a shame if they didn't do more with such an unusual character.

Yes, those were some of the ones I was looking for <3 Especially the third one; that's kind of what made me really want to read LH in the first place. :) So sweet.

edit: Also, I just love the idea of MM/Rebektrebn <3

Yeah, I would have loved some more characterization for him, too. Especially at the very end; we got POV from him at some great spots, but I feel like there should be a scene there, after he's ... you know ... changed his mind.

Yeah the latter part of the story feel a little like a race to the end, I suppose to keep the action up but yeah totally agree it couldn have done with a little something else. Or perhaps that's the tragedy? They don't get a chance? Meh, I dunno ^__^

LH is my favourite of all the RD novels, partly because it's the only one that doesn't recycle 99% of the plot from the shows so it actually feels like a new ep but also because, as you say, it is the most emotionally complex and satisfying. To me, it feels like the book where they've finally all grown up. I've been writing an epic Last Human fic for about 3 years now that's never quite made it to completion...

DAMN. I just took a break from writing articles for work and read that story. That has to be one of the best fics I've read in a long time, in any fandom. I realized it was part of a series, so I've bookmarked it to read the rest later.

After only a month hanging around here, I continue to be amazed at the quality of storytelling this fandom produces. Or at least you guys in this community ... you are WAY difficult acts to follow, for a writer ...

Strangely enough it was never meant to be a series - it started as a oneshot called 'Only the One' (now part seven of ten) and then I wrote part one ('Caterpillars and Butterflies') very quickly as a ficgift (so I should really go over and fix the bugs in it one of these days, I really didn't take my time over it) and then it all spawned out of control grew from there.

Or at least you guys in this community ... you are WAY difficult acts to follow, for a writer ...

Isn't it funny. I read your stuff and the other fics posted on this community and think 'crap, wish I was as good as that'.
