Yeah, it's hard...I originally planned a happy ending that involved Rimmer not leaving, but it wouldn't have worked. Poor Rimmer, I'm so mean.

Actually, this brings me to a thought: I feel IIke I haven't seen many fics with Lister angsting one-sided over Rimmer, while there's plenty with the other way around or mutual crushes/angst/confusion. I wonder if this is due to Lister's canonical history with women?

I think so, yes. I think people often assume that Lister would have much more confidence in making a pass than Rimmer because he's a lot more experienced. He also has better self-esteem than Rimmer, although admittedly that's not difficult.

Also, to be fair, Rimmer does come across as quite reactive rather than proactive. Although now I'm wondering how much fanfic has influenced my opinion in that area...

Yes, the influence of fanfics — definitely. All of my angsty fic ideas so far have involved Rimmer being in unrequited love with Lister, and that is most likely because I've read and enjoyed several stories with that premise. It's very difficult for me to picture Lister as the one who gets rejected and Rimmer as the one who's got someone else or Just Doesn't Feel That Way (I guess the closest I've seen is Fifty Shades, although that's more a case of Rimmer not understanding his own feelings). Maybe it could work if Lister weren't so lovable!

Yeah, Lister is so generally lovable (usually) that not many here can picture Rimmer not being in love with him - it's just a question of when he realises it.

There is a distinct lack of other candidates for Rimmer's affections though. It's not as though he constantly brings up Nirvanah the way Lister does Kochanski.

Oh that made tears sting the backs of my eyes. I love it though! I can understand your indecision. On the one hand it would be lovely to see it continued and see what it takes to make Lister come around and realize what he's got with Rimmer, but on the other hand it works incredibly well as a stand-alone work with a sad ending.

I'm tempted to say leave it as is. We love a happy ending for these boys, but it's kind of nice to see one that ends as sadly as this. Especially since it's all so probable. But... how can I ever say that I don't want to see Lister and Rimmer kiss and make up at the end? :)
