So, Ace Rimmer.

Do you believe that there was only one originating Ace that broke the dimension barrier, or could several have done it?

Do you believe that there's only one of them at a time, or are there multiple Aces flying around the dimensions, saving people hunting things. The family business?

What would happen if an Ace met another Ace? Interdimensional rift like the one that brought Kochanski to our Red Dwarf? An implosion like a dying star that creates a black hole? Is that where a time dilation field comes from, when one Ace meets another? Or is it just another day in meeting yourself?

What we didn't get to see in Dimension Jump was Ace touching Rimmer, because our Rimmer was a hologram. And because of split screen limitations, we didn't get to see them touch (I don't think) in Stoke Me a Clipper.

And on a purely peeved note, why would Ace have holographic clothes? Did he have to explain to all his lovers that he was a hologram? He went through the trouble of hiding the "H"; why not real clothes?

posting on behalf of janamelie -petition

Yeah, we probably don't need to do anything about this petition, since this was just posted by Digital Spy: http://www.digitalspy.com/british-tv/feature/a564887/the-office-top-gear-and-more-bbc-twos-greatest-ever-shows.html#~oC1VLsqI1NsYLZ It lists Red Dwarf as the FIRST SHOW mentioned as being eligible, so whoever thought the show was snubbed in the first place read it wrong. Not that it hasn't been snubbed by BBC in the past.

The rules are as follows: shows like Red Dwarf that originated on BBC Two are eligible, but shows better associated with another channel are not - say Top of the Pops, which aired on BBC One for the majority of its run but shifted to the sister channel for its final episodes.

And someone commented that it's been mentioned twice in the BBC retrospective tonight. So. Yah?

Go to change.org and sign the petition. It's time BBC ADMITTED and ACKNOWLEDGED that Red Dwarf is one of their own.

A writing question

As you're writing, does anyone else have trouble reading their story as if you had no knowledge of it? I keep getting stuck because I'll have whole passages written, then realize I haven't explained or described anything because it was crystal clear in my head. I (sometimes) know the outcome of the story when I'm working on the beginning, so I have the endgame in my head as I'm writing, but that doesn't always translate into actual descriptive words.

Anyone else have this problem, or am I just an overly visual person trying to relay what I see in my head onto (virtual) paper?

Why Mr. Barrie...

From the Daventry Express:

Chris Barrie, who plays Rimmer in the hit science-fiction comedy series, was on hand to sign authographs from a queue of waiting fans.

Speaking to the Daventry Express, the 53-year-old said: “I think the shop is extremely impressive. And what I think it does is put our love for coffee into a very different environment.”

He also has a lot of fond memories of working on the show.

Chris said: “It is hard to pick one favourite moment across the 10 series that we have done, as we are now working on series 11. But Dimension Jump in the fourth series is always a favourite,

While not the best of articles, it does beg the question; working on series 11? I know they're gearing up to do it...at some point...in the near future... Or is that what he meant? They've been flirting and teasing us with a commission...maybe a nice Christmas pressie?

ETA: can anyone get the video to play? It isn't doing anything for me :(

You know what annoys me about S8?

Well, aside from "Krytie TV". It's the fact that Hollister had Rimmer enter the psychotropic testing without his knowledge. The other four had to sign consent forms, acknowledge that they understood what was going to happen to them and agreed to be placed in the AR environment. Rimmer was just told to lick an envelope that was posted to himself.

I know Rimmer represented himself at his trial, but it never should have come to that, or his entire case thrown out on the basis of entrapment. Nothing he said or did in the AR environment should have been allowed as evidence, which means that Hollister would have had to prove another way that Rimmer was using confidential files for his personal gain. And if Rimmer had a shred of self-preservation (and we know he has it in spades), he might have been able to keep it to himself or at least slide by without being overt. I don't know; that one part has always bugged me.

Get your own holographic Rimmer!

Holograms have always been a quick, easy way for movies to tell us they're taking place in the future. As soon as you see someone talking with a human-sized hologram, you realize there's no way you'll ever be able to do that, and a part of you dies. Now, a company on Kickstarter promises to bring you the holographic… Read…

Excerpt of importance:
But a life-size hologram is something anyone who's watched a science fiction movie has secretly dreamed about.

I'll take two, please!

Other ways to become an officer?

Pretty much what it says on the tin. We saw Lister try to become a chef to outrank Rimmer, but would he have been an officer?

What other postings on Red Dwarf would be officer status besides navigation officer? What other exams could be taken?

Will Lister be an officer if he passes his mechanical engineering exams?

These questions and many others will be answered in the next episode of...Soap! Er...wrong show...

odd/interesting/odd about Holly

Holly calls them "Dave" and "Arnold," doesn't he? Not "Lister" and "Rimmer," at least not Rimmer. Female Holly in Bodyswap says "All right, Dave." In the pilot, it was 'Everybody's dead, Dave." In "Future Echoes," it's all "Arnold."

So it's just the crew that called each other by their last names, or Holly's informal now that they're the only ones left alive? Just something I've wondered.

'Pass the parcel' is that what we're calling it now?

From Cultfix.com's review of "The Beginning" and the series as a whole:

"Well, in many ways it feels like Rimmer and Lister have been playing pass the parcel each week when it comes to leading the story."

Assistance with finding scenes/clips

I'm working on a RD vid and I've got the basic structure down. It's a constructed reality, so I'm essentially rewriting the show to fit into the story I want to tell. It's starts off with Rimmer dying in the Out of Time deleted scene where Rimmer blasts the time drive. All Lister has to remember him is the light bee. I have the memorial scene for Rimmer/Ace to use, but I need a scene between them.

I need Rimmer either unconscious on the floor, or just a light bee on the floor for someone to pick up. Or just a really good reaction shot of Lister looking horrified/upset. The Inquisitor removing Rimmer and Cat and Lister thinks they've been erased does have potential, but I'm hoping for something better. I've looked at a few:

Quarantine has the wrong uniform for Rimmer (should be either the blue or red quilted) when he switches out of the gingham dress.
Kryten and Cat holding back Lister as Kochanski falls through the wormhole in Ouroboros isn't quite right (and Lister looks silly).
I'll need to check the medibay scene from Rimmerworld with Rimmer lying down, but I don't think that will work.
Lister's too happy about having the light bee to toss around in -- was it Meltdown? Where he swallowed it?
Legion grabbing the light bee from soft-light Rimmer doesn't quite fit the emotion I want and is too short.

Another topic; if I wanted to get someone to watch the show, who derides it as a comedy yet loves Farscape....what episode(s) should I make her watch to show her that it's a good show with awesome science stuff? She's a geek/sci-fi fan, but has never "understood" my love of the show. I've been forced to watch too many shows she likes, but she won't return the favor and give a show I like a chance. While The End has a nice set up for what's going on, I don't think it's necessary to get into the show (I'm pretty sure I didn't see it first). Future Echoes might be fun and is chock full of science goodness. And this isn't just about your favorite episodes :)

Thank you!!

Semi OT

This is a slightly OT post, I'm sorry, but this seems to be the only RD group that has any activity at the moment.

Cut for slight OT-ness )

Phe

Question!

Okay, so it has nothing to do with slash, but it has plenty to do with RD.

In Balance of Power, as we know, Lister takes (and fails) the Chef's Exam. But how is it assessed?

* Lister obviously can't assess his own cooking.
* I doubt the Cat would trust Lister's cooking enough to eat it, and during S1 is too self-centred to do such a thing anyway.
* Rimmer's soft-light, and wouldn't do it either.
* Holly doesn't exactly have taste buds.

So how can the exam be assessed? I mean, I would assume that at least part of the requirements for passing would be that the food was edible... but there's nobody who can judge that!

Thoughts?

OT - another pairing.

On the topic of other contributions of Mr. Barrie, I started posting my Tomb Raider slash to Rareslash, as there is no dedicated group. I'm surprised that nobody else seems to be doing this pairing, and would love links if I'm wrong about that.

Input needed!

Hello, all! I hope this isn't against the rules, and if it is, feel free to delete.

So for my computer graphics course, we have to make propaganda posters from photos of ourselves in Adobe Illustrator. Well, I decided to be funny (though I doubt anyone will get it) and do a Red Dwarf recruitment sign.

So what I need from you folks is some ideas on a catchy phrase/slogan. Please and thank you!

x-posted. Sorry, guys.
