It's sort of a character study, I guess. lady_draco likes punchups, so I wanted to write her one as an early B-day present. But then I had to think about when that might realistically occur. Rimmer uses words, not fists. kahvi noted that Lister would have to be pushed to a moment of emotional loss of control, and so I figured it should be at the intersection of 1 - UST between Rimmer and Lister (VI), 2 - the general nastiness of the early days stuck on Starbug, 3 - contrast for Lister between what Rimmer can be and what he chooses to be (his stint as Ace), 4 - Rimmer generally being an asshole, 5 - Kochanski, and 6 - generic insulting of him (especially gay flamer insults, which rarely go down well with working-class blokes). Hence this thing.
I was also really hoping I could prod kahvi into writing a Lister-POV, which tends to bring the slash out. :)
Wow. I like the thought you put into the review. 1. I still haven't seen VI yet..., 2. Being stuck on tiny quarters would make everyone/anyone tense..., 3. Indeed!, 4. It's natural for him, unfortunately. 5. Kochanski..., 6. Any kind of insults don't go down well with Lister, I think. This thing was wonderful. ;D
And yes, prodding kahvi into writing fic is a good thing.
Oh, well done. You found Lister's trigger, all right.
Kielbasa. Tee hee.
"Get out the holo-whip and play Last Man Alive Ranger and High-ho Silver. Such a nice guy he is, he'd even let you play the girl sometimes. Or maybe let you swap out his disk with Kochanski's, now and then, just for variet..." I am in love with this paragraph.
There's something I love about Rimmer being an ass to Ace. One of my favorite lines ever is our oft-brought-up "They're all the same, this type; you know, hurly-burly, rough-and-tumble macho marines in public, and behind closed doors he'll be parading up and down in taffeta ballgowns, drinking mint juleps, and whipping the houseboy."
Dagnabbit, Rimmer really is a nasty bitch. I'd have whacked him a few times myself. The only surprise is how long Lister held out. I suppose he's had plenty of practise.
Oh, what a day it has been! What a day indeed! First, Australia win the World Cup get through to the next round; next, boss tells me that I can go home early so I can party; and last but not least, I get to read a punch up. *sighs* What an absolutely splendid day.
I cannot understand what it is about punch ups that just make me so, uh, happy but they do! This one was lovely. :) Loved Rimmer's whole "OMG Starbug is getting hit by a meteor". ;) And Lister would definitely need an intense amount of provocation before he resorts to hitting one of his crew mates. Rimmer, the little prick, deserved everything that he got.
Oh wow, that was perfect, perfect. Though I know that Rimmer had in comming in a loooooooong time it was still a bit of a surpirse and shock, because, yeah, Lister is the nice guy, right? Nice guys don't hit other guys, even if they are smegheads... right? Right? Maybe Rimmer hit too close to home! :P
