Well, I dont think his voice of reason in Tikka was such a big difference, he has always been good at pointing out things that are too risky to be worth the possible gain.
I think the change was mostly inside him at that point. If he had stayed with them, his behaviour would probably gradually have changed too. Old habits are hard to shift.

Ja, but I felt some kind of terribly strained tension that had existed in VI was gone between the two of them in VII. (I know C&C were getting along at that point, but I think it works in the context of the story, too.) There was a tentative friendship between the two of them in VII that just felt so... potential-ful. Damn SMAC. But that bit when they stand at the railing, shoulder-to-shoulder (stone cold sober) - that scene would not have happened in any other season, IMO. Things were changing.

There is that scene back in II where Lister is coming up to see Rimmer who has been told that his father died. It is always there I think. But moreso as the seasons go by.
My pet theory is that Lister actually hoped that being Ace would fully turn Rimmer into what he could be, and that is the person that he dreams about coming back. So he sent him off with the hope of getting a friend back.
It is so intersting how Lister reacts to Ace and still being completely aware that this is Rimmer - that is how he always wanted to be able to relate to Rimmer.

Oh, yes - and it also seems to me that meeing Ace increases Lister's frustration with Rimmer. "This is what you could be - if you just tried!"

Absolutely, the whole thing must have been very painful for Lister ::says my slashy mind:: Rimmer distances himself from this being him, while Lister has a real experience of what he wants and then it is taken away ::sigh::

Yep! And Lister's touching of Ace seemed so eager, but tentative - as in, this is what I've been wanting, but I don't know if I should get used to it...

After all, Ace isn't exactly what he wants (says my slashy mind).

Yes, he admitted to Rimmer later that he also found Ace to be a bit full of himself. What he wants is what he tells Rimmer he should be - a different Ace, but for the chance to get that some day, he needs to let Rimmer go ::sniff, sniff::

Well, at the end of the day we have to blame the actors again. If Chris only hadnt wanted out, things could have progressed much better.
