I know what you mean about SMAC. My conseptions of how it can all turn out are pretty bleak as well. That's probably why the story made me so sad.

No, that's the thing that bothered me about Backwards - the thought that a parallel would be a dandy fillin for the real person. Well, that's my take.

So sad...*sniff* Beautiful, but sad. Where have all the happy stories gone?? Lol. And that's just the thing with substitute-ing Rimmer- he's not OUR Rimmer. (That's why VIII doesn't really work for me.) But I enjoyed your story- all the angst and pain... you write that really well:-) And the characterization was spot-on as well. Great storyline.

Ja, I think that's the thing to pull from VIII - and I think Lister knew that VIII-Rimmer was no substitute. He tried, and there was something there, but there was also something missing. Ach.

Well, it was all the Ace-talk that brought that one out. I'll see if I can write some happyfic. Trouble is, my fanfic100 claim is not fertile ground for happyfic. But I might write a little Rimmer/Rachel. ;)

That's a really great scene. Felt like I was there.

Ja, I really felt a strong desire to write this from Rimmer's POV, and he wouldn't know that Lister was looking for a scar - wouldn't know that Lister was looking for 'his' Rimmer at all, until tea.

Alright, I have NO idea why this fic hasn't received more comments. Good fanfiction is hard to find, and good Red Dwarf fanfiction is especially hard to find. But I really, really like this fic (series?), with it's unusual twists and not-quite-our-Rimmer/Lister. I mean. Gah. Um. Lister must be feeling very horrible, the poor thing. And Ace!Rimmer being, well, Ace and a Nice Guy but secretly despising it all and... made me wonder if all the Aces really feel like that. Heh, being Ace must be really fucked up, I'm glad I don't have to do that.

So, yeah. Thumbs up :)

Yes, the whole 'dimensional alternates' thing is a bit of RD canon that I find highly disturbing, on a number of levels, and I wanted to play with that a bit. Especially the idea of an alternate being a replacement for the original, which you get, somewhat, at the end of Rob Grant's Backwards - but the show seemed to do the idea a bit more justice.

Kat has said - and I agree - that the hard-light Lister we see in Oroborous has really changed a lot for Kochanski II, and she did not seem to make allowances for him, which makes it an unbalanced relationship. In some ways, 'our' Lister has more integrity...

I think it's a fundamental Rimmer thing to be neurotic and dissatisfied, regardless of whether you're Ace or Arn. :)
