Date: 2006-09-23 12:09 pm (UTC)Actually, I never saw the end of OOT as Rimmer wanting to kill them. He did comunicate the message but that doesn't mean the decision wasn't mutual. They all seemed pretty far gone when they were on the present Starbug. The bodyectomy is an interesting and chilling idea, but I don't think that's likely. Kryten would have gone homocidal (or hologramcidal, or whatever), and Lister or what was left of him would have been likely to hold a gruge, and he seemed to agree with everyone elses charming views (altough what is the use of beeing an epicure if you're just a brian in a jar is beyond me). So all of them had to potential to be extremly nasty. Everyone does. Perhaps it just seemed closer to the surface with Rimmer. Well, that's my idea of it anyway. Sorry for the ramble.

Date: 2006-09-24 01:30 am (UTC)He was, in his own self-glorifying way. Leaving people to their doom just isn't on. And I think Lister recognized that - Lister wouldn't be able to leave things as they were either. That's one of the things I don't like about the episode - Lister was trying to talk Rimmer out of his wacky scheme, but at no point did he offer an alternative. So yeah, I like your nod to Rimmer-who-is-trying-to-be-good-but-isn't-very-good-at-it.
Two of me three favourite body parts, gone, just like that.
lol. I really liked that line. The show never really stopped to focus on just how bright Lister was - he's managed to learn and tinker his way through some very complex stuff, all of which seemed to be taken for granted or written off as a fluke.
Sendin' him off like that - it wasn't a death sentence, but it sure was something kinda dicey.
Yes. Yes it was. I hope you're feeling very shameful, Lister.
I got my Kochanski - but she's not my Kochanski, and I'm not her Dave. It was just too easy, and nothing too easy works out.
Someone should mention this to Doug. That's why I like book!Kochanski better - she is Lister's Kochanski. That, and the fact that she's more willingly integrated into the crew.
... I'm not really talking about your fic much, am I? Which I guess is a good thing, because it means you've incorporated a whole heap of themes that were glossed over in the show and given them some backing, some extrapolation. I think you got Lister's voice down, and how he sees Rimmer - the whole little Rimmer progression from Smegger to Scary to... uh... sentiment. I'm going to back away from the alliteration now.

Date: 2006-09-24 02:03 am (UTC)I kinda think Lister did feel bad about that, later. He just had these odd spells of lassitude in VII and VIII, like he was missing something... had betrayed some part of himself he cared about (Back To Reality?).
Oh, yes, I do like Last Human-Kochanski. :D

Date: 2006-10-04 11:35 am (UTC)Did I try to stop 'im, at some point in the past, and got that bodyectomy?
The exact same thought occurred to me. I think it very likely, actually.
*jealous*
Sendin' him off like that - it wasn't a death sentence, but it sure was something kinda dicey.
He's not quite there yet, but it's beginning to dawn on him, isn't it?
But it all came back wrong, didn't it?
Yep. There's something to that Karma business after all, methinks.
partly because I always liked my right hand better
That is so adorable, and so, so Lister.
