Okay, folks. Here's the thing. I have this domain name that I bought to start an archive, and have done bugger-all with because I'm stumped. The domain name in question is starbuggery.com.

I'd like to get Starbuggery* up and running with all our Red Dwarf stories, from the lovely new stories you lot have churned out to the golden classics of the RDSS heyday. And I'd like to launch on or before the planned April air date for the new episodes.

I am appealing to you, the best fandom in the history of ever. I need your help. If you, or anyone you know, has any ability with skinning eFiction whatsoever, WE NEED THEM. I'm not married to eFiction -- if you know of another fic archive code that will allow users to upload their own work, by all means, let me know.

I think we can do this.


*In spite of the name's implications, we will be accepting het and gen as well. I just like the word Starbuggery.

Well, about this time last year I was just taking down an Automated Archive (think 852 Prospect (http://852prospect.org/archive/), DSA (http://squidge.org/dsa/), SSA (http://smallville.slashdom.net), Horizon (http://www.squidge.org/horizon/), Yuletide (http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/), The Glass Onion Archive (multifandom, it turned out) (http://glassonion.populli.org/), tSFAMA (http://spanderfiles.thekipple.net), to name a few) I made for a small fandom that resulted in zero stories being posted to it, but I still have all the coding and such in a folder on my site. (Which is/was here (http://sba.thekipple.net), btw.)

Moving the whole thing as-is to your site would not be a problem for me (as long as you can give me something like ftp access to the folder in question so I can just Total Commader the whole lot over), and I can be talked into doing the customizing so it reflects the new fandom, site, email addies and all the basics, but I don't have the time or energy for making new fandom-appropriate pages (main, FAQ, etc) and CSS layout(s). But I can certainly tell you the basic how-to's of an AA archive and the place to go to learn more and ask for help, so I wouldn't leave you hanging.

Anyways, I think your main concern might be getting writers' interests in using your archive in the first place. Wouldn't want you to flunk out like I did, it's an awful feeling to have so much work and hope go to perfect waste.

It's been something the RDSS and now reddwarfslash has wanted to accomplish for years. Using eFiction isn't the problem, I've done it before and I'm familiar with how it works. Skinning it is the issue, because as well as being functional, I want it to look nice. So my first concern would be, how easy/difficult would it be to make AA look pretty?

Well, if you want it to be maximally CSS compliant I could ask the owner of the Glass Onion archive for her code - she added loads to the html base code to make almost everything CSS code-able, but I think my own archive wasn't that bad.

Anyways, you can take a look at the archives I linked to in my prev. comment and see what the basics are like - images can be added, of course, fairly easily - and see what you think.

AA is not as sofisticated as eFiction, but on the up side there's folks who know how to make 'em do just about anything. (That, and the CSS layouts are fairly simple to get a hang of in the basic form, but like I said, they can be sup'ed up as well.)
