Loophole

We talked about it a thousand times, but never this eventuality. Of course we talked about it. I’m mortal, I’m gonna die. No way around that. But your damn hardlight drive would probably go on forever – or as close to forever as I could foresee.

We knew it would be hard. I prayed for the best and expected the worst, each night holding you, thinking that one lifetime was not enough.

We’d almost gotten closure on it, we had a plan. You knew you’d have my guitar, my bike, and anything of any worth I possessed. Not that you wanted any of it. You promised me over and over again, when I asked you to, that you wouldn’t turn yourself off, no matter how difficult it got without me. I also knew you were lying, and you’d offline within days. But I still hoped.

It wasn’t supposed to happen. I wasn’t prepared for this.

Rimmer, man, I thought it would be me first. I never considered having to live without you.

I don’t even want to. And of course, I don’t have to.

I learned the intricacies of loopholes from you, smeghead.

After all, I promised you no such thing.
