Summary: “Well, it’s not my fault you decided to come back so early.” Slash.
Rating: PG-13
Author: Ellie ET
Disclaimer: I admit I’m not either one of those talented writers who brought us that funny, hilarious, ultra-slashy show we all know and love today.
Hey - I wrote a completely original fic! Not a missing-scene fic, and not a post-episode fic - an actual, original fic! Set during Series 5, just because that series is the best out of all of them and it’s more convincing; I see S5 as the series that took the show to a whole other level. Really, in a perfect world, I’d like it to take place after ‘Demons and Angels’ but really, it can happen at any time. And please note this is slash, people. Slash.
Hiding around the corridor corner, the Cat watched as Lister muttered instructions to two Skutters standing by his feet, the trio unaware that they were being spied on and overheard as they carried out a hurried conversation just outside Cat’s quarters.
“OK, look – just a couple, just a couple each – what?”
One of the Skutters clicked and whirred at him, evidently saying something. Judging by the change in Lister’s tone of voice, he was annoyed at the service robot’s remark.
“Look, it’s a surprise, OK? What you mean – no, I’m not being a suck-up!” he snapped at the second Skutter, which had also piped up with a ‘comment’ of its own. Without a sound, Cat stepped around the corner in full view, although neither of the Skutters noticed and Lister, who had his back to the feline whilst arguing with them, certainly didn’t. As Cat came to a stop behind him and realized that his presence had still not been taken account of, he simply raised one arm and leaned against the wall.
“No, I don’t – what?” Lister blinked down at Bob as the Skutter started to make increasingly fast whirring noises. Turning around, he glanced at Cat for a second, before turning back to Bob. Eyes suddenly widening, he felt his spine stiffen, and he wheeled around again to be met with the sight of two raised eyebrows and a neutrally poised mouth.
“Cat – hi.” Both hands flying to his sides, the human bit his lip as he stared up into Cat’s face, all too aware of the hurried whirrs behind them as Bob and Sally the Skutters quickly disappeared through the open door of Cat’s bedroom. Although he could have sworn the Cat looked slightly amused, the feline’s tone of voice was unfathomable.
“What’re you doing?” Cat asked, folding both his arms.
Lister glanced over his shoulder to ensure that the Skutters were out of the way before turning back to him, a complete loss of what to say. Cat simply waited, becoming more curious and annoyed by the second as he surveyed the human, who in turn started gulping and shuffling his feet.
“Ah – what it is – “
Cat rolled his eyes to the ceiling, knowing this was going to take a while. Maybe Lister spotted this, because he quickly added, “Ah, me and the Skutters – well – we’re – having a business meeting!” Struck by a sudden inspiration, he nodded hurriedly. “A – a meeting regarding the – the – “
His glance fell on the opposite corridor wall, on a board that was property of the Skutters and covered with various notices and posters, all of which had been written by the small robots. Even in his moment of desperation, Lister couldn’t help taking notice of the poster with a picture of a Skutter on the front and with the words: ‘Have you seen James?’ – in fact, he could have sworn he saw that Skutter just the other day.
“The Skutters’ Board!” he quickly shot at Cat as he hurried across to stand next to it. “Yeah – I’ve been assigned their new – board-keeper. See, what I do, is,” he ripped a leaflet on ‘Caring For Your Wires’ from the board and waved it in front of him, “I remove things – and – and – “ He trailed of under the piercing stare; his hands became fists and he sighed. “You’re not gonna buy this, are you?”
Cat shook his head, the tiniest hint of a smile visible. “ ‘Fraid not.”
Lister frowned at him. “Well, it’s not my fault you decided to come back so early.”
Cat held up both his palms. “What, so I’m not allowed in my own room?”
Lister let out a disappointed breath of air. “We were hoping to have it ready before you arrived. Bob and Sally were helping – well – they’re the only ones who really knew – “
Cat frowned back at him. “Huh? Knew what? Get what ready?” He made for the door of his cabin, which was now half-closed, but Bob hurriedly rolled out, blocking the gap in the entrance. Cat stared over at Lister.
“What’s goin’ on in there?” he demanded. Bob turned his crane of a head to the human. Lister nodded somewhat gloomily.
“It’s OK, Bob. You might as well show him now.”
Bob blinked at him with his one mechanical eye, before rolling out past Cat to grant him a clear passage. Cat glanced at Lister briefly before cautiously stepping inside.
The colourful extravagance of Cat’s room changed almost weekly, depending on what the feline was in the mood for, but it didn’t take him long to spot the large, albeit empty, fish-tank that was sitting right next to his bed. On hearing Sally whirring behind him, he turned around and blinked as he saw the Skutter standing next to a plain yet large goldfish bowl which was full of exotic, silvery-blue fish.
Gaping, Cat kneeled down in front of the bowl and peeked through the glass, watching the fish scatter as they saw him. He then glanced up at Lister, who had entered the room hesitantly and was watching intently, obviously for some kind of reaction.
“What – these are for me?” Cat stared up at him.
Lister nodded. “Yeah. They’re – er – they’re Findiatamae. Took a lot of hunting to get them, let me tell you.”
“But – bud, these are said to be the tastiest fish in the entire cosmos! How did you get your hands on them?”
Lister grinned slightly, coming over to stand next to him, putting a hand on Cat’s shoulder. “If I told you I’d have to get these two to strangle you.” He gestured to both Bob and Sally. “They knew how to handle this lot, so I asked them for their help. It was supposed to be a surprise.” He glanced at Cat somewhat accusingly before shrugging. “Well, never mind, eh? So long as you’re happy.”
“Happy? Bud, they’re making me drool already,” Cat murmured, as he continued to stare through the glass. Lister’s grin widened, both in relief and satisfaction; he clapped Cat on the shoulder and made to leave. Cat glanced up.
“Hey – where are you going?”
Lister turned around. “You’re fine there, and I’ve got some other things to do. See you later.”
Cat quickly stood up, one hand on his hip, the other gesturing for Lister to come back. “Ah-ah-ah.” As Lister approached him curiously, he said, “Look, you don’t think I’d let you leave just like that, do you? After you managed to get your hands on these guys?” He gestured down at the fish, raising an eyebrow at the human. Lister followed his gestures with his eyes, looking slightly wary.
“Well – yeah, actually…”
Cat cocked his head to the side, one hand landing on Lister’s shoulder. “What, and you’re not going to let me thank you properly?”
Lister’s mouth went slightly dry as Cat pulled his face towards him and kissed him, thoroughly and ever so deeply, his cool hands resting on both sides of Lister’s face. Lister allowed him a moment of dominance, although he could feel his brain protesting even as he finally managed to pull away slightly and spoke in what didn’t feel remotely like a firm voice.
“Sorry – I’m really busy this afternoon – helping Kryten and Holly – I have to go – “
Cat held up one hand to silence him. “Correction – you thought you were going to be busy helping Kryten and Holly.” He narrowed his eyes, but not in annoyance; more in resemblance to a predatory tiger. The meaning all too clear, Lister melted into their next kiss, not even noticing as Cat clumsily gestured to the Skutters over his shoulder, pointing in the general direction of the door. Obediently, the Skutters made to leave, but not before activating the lock from the inside in order to give the human and feline some privacy.
“Cat…” As the door clunked shut behind them, Lister moaned into his partner’s mouth, feeling Cat grip his sleeves. “You’re – mmph – really rotten – ah – you know that?”
Dragging his mouth away from Lister’s to give him a chance to breathe, Cat muttered in reply, “You’re the one who spoils me too much – I just wanna thank you. What’s up with that?”
Lister shrugged, even as Cat took the opportunity to chase his mouth again. “Never said there was, man.”
