If you're not following Doug Naylor (DougRDNaylor) on Twitter you REALLY need to start doing it now. He's tweeting all over the place about 'upcoming RD news' and 'film in front of an audience or not? Vote now!' He even said to bobbyllew 'you'll be tweeting as you bloody film - "I'm about to say my next line".!'

Judging by his replies, it seems that the producers DON'T want an audience as it's too expensive. BTE didn't make a concious decision to not have an audience to shift the tone of the show - they simply couldnt' AFFORD an audience. I reckon he's feeling a bit torn by it....

They never seemed to have any money before, but they always had an audience :( I wish we could go back to that.

I don't get how an audience could be expensive either, but I suppose it might be to do with costs that weren't needed 20 years ago. Some things, like security measures, are a much bigger deal these days. Which is sad, but what can you do? From what I understand, all the actors prefer an audience, and I think that's a huge argument in its favor.

*shrug* I really don't know. But his reply tweets to other people show that they couldn't afford an audience and they could only afford four sets! :-)

I feel his pain; it's better with audience reaction - not because we don't know where to laugh, as is often suggested, but because the show HAS a fair amount of angst and that extra bit of laughter helps keep the mood of watching light. Besides, you can't tell me it doesn't push a performer, to get an immediate response like that; I've never had a bit of interest to go into commercial acting for a camera, but I DO enjoy performing live and have done it enough times to know the woofs matter, at least to me.

Oh gosh yes I know what you mean. I used to LOVE my theatre work years ago.... *le sigh*

It's a real shame - I felt that the audience laughter gave the show a real soul and depth. But judging by the tweets flying back and forth he's terrified of the plots being leaked before they're aired. Personally I think this would be less of an issue for an actual series, but obviously for BTE it would have really spoilt it.
