~ Falling into you ~

~ Two: The way you do the things you do

Lister couldn’t believe his utter smegging luck when he first set eyes on the newly resurrected Rimmer on the newly rebuilt Red Dwarf. It was like Lady Luck was smiling on him for once, presenting him with a second chance.

He’d let Rimmer leave without ever telling him how he felt and had regretted his cowardice ever since.

But now, being faced with a real live Rimmer, he decided to go for it. No time to lose. He would tell Rimmer how he felt about him if it was the last thing he did. Starting now.

Or better, yet, tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow was good.

~

On the other hand, there might be more romantic ways to seduce your bunkmate than sitting opposite him in manacles. Tomorrow then. Definitely.

~

37 days later:

“What are those, Listy?” Rimmer suspiciously eyed the centre of the table, where, between the two trays with their supper, sat two bags of flour.

“I’m trying to make the cell look more homely.”

“With two bags of flour? Where did you read that? Astonishingly Bizarre Ways to Redecorate Your Prison Cell – monthly?”

“It was the closest I could get to the real thing.” Lister defended himself. And it hadn’t been in Astonishingly Bizarre Ways to Redecorate Your Prison Cell – monthly, it had been in Astonishingly Simple Ways to Make Him Acknowledge You –Chapter Three: Buy flowers. Not that Lister was ever going to admit to even knowing about the book.

Rimmer cocked an eyebrow, but said nothing more. He also didn’t say anything when he noticed there were two bowls of pudding on his tray and none on Lister’s.

~

A few hours later they were getting ready for Lights Out. Rimmer changed into his PJs and Lister pretended not to watch him out of the corner of his eye.

“That was good work you did today, man.” Lister announced.

He allowed himself to pat Rimmer on the back after the latter had discarded his shirt. The skin was flushed under Lister’s fingers and maybe he let his hand linger a heartbeat longer than necessary.

“Oh really? We nearly got eaten by a giant caterpillar. When I say ‘we’, clearly I mean everyone except Cat, who actually did get eaten. Lucky for him his hairspray’s indigestible. Got spat out quicker than a mouldy Christmas muffin on Easter.”

“Still,” Lister replied, climbing into his bunk, “I appreciate you killed it before it could get to us.”

“Purely by accident. Who knew a simple sneeze would dissolve its skin and turn it into a puddle of foam?!”

They went to bed and waited in mutual silence until the lights went out and bathed everything in total darkness. Lister didn’t like Lights Out. It was too dark. No shadows or silhouettes to distract him from his memories.

After a moment he told the silence, “I was worried it might swallow you. Weird. I never used to worry about you, because you couldn’t really die before. When you were a hologram, I mean.”

Rimmer didn’t respond to this unusual confession.

“I guess I sorta took you for granted.” Lister continued.

Another spell of silence lasted.

“I’m really glad I got you back, Rimmer.”

But Rimmer didn’t reply. Maybe he had already fallen asleep, Lister mused, which was preferable.

“So,” Kryten synopsised two weeks later. He and Lister were on punishment duty – toilet scrubbing: Kryten still couldn’t believe his luck. He made Lister sit down and relax while he blissfully cleaned the floor with a toothbrush.

“The Prison Spring Ball is three weeks from now and you’re not going to ask Miss Kochanski to come as your date because you have realized you’d much rather go with someone else. Am I correct?”

Lister nodded. He was correct, but Lister would rather cut out his tongue and eat it with curry sauce, than tell Kryten who he wanted to go with instead.

“And why have you confessed this to me, Mister Lister? Is there anything I can do for you? Surely you don’t want to ask me out, right?” He gave his mechanical, android laugh and Lister had to grin at that.

“Course not, Kryten. But you know… how do you ask someone out on a date you’ve known for a really long time? The last time I went on a date was more than three million years ago and Kochanski sorta picked me up! I feel a bit rusty, if you know what I mean. And if he says no, I’ll look a right smegging idiot.”

“Hm, yes, I think I understand. Like a fish out of water or a chicken out of its vindaloo. But, Mister Lister, sir, you are a lovable, wonderful human being. Funny, capable and you almost change your underwear weekly. I don’t see why anyone would want to refuse to go out on a date with you. Apart from Miss Kochanski, who is a frigid, backbiting space shrew, if you ask me. Bitch mode cancelled.”

Lister wasn’t sure if that helped, but he was grateful anyway and he said so.

“You are most welcome. Do you want me to ask Cat out for you? Living with the women, I know that this is common practice in such situations.”

“I wasn’t talking about Cat, Kryten.”

“Oh. My mistake. I simply assumed, because everybody else seems to ‘have the hots for him’, if you pardon my colloquial expression. He does look rather dashing in his prison uniform.”

To that Lister finally laughed out loud.
