Heart thumping so loudly in his chest he could feel it pounding in his ears, Rimmer followed Lister back to their quarters in silence. They'd defeated the simulant death ship, survived the attack with only a minor hull breach, and Rimmer was no longer a Rimmer.
His breathing sped up to a point near hyperventilation. No longer was he required to be better than others or struggle to uphold his father's lofty ideals. He was a simple gardener's son, who encouraged him to stand up for himself when he was bullied at school. Who dug him out when his brothers buried him in the sand trap. Who seemed to genuinely like him for who he was, rather than how high in rank he rose or who he slept with.
He stopped in the doorway, letting Lister continue into the room. He licked his lips as Lister turned around, his mouth opening to say something. "Hey, Rim—"
In two quick strides, Rimmer had Lister's face cupped between his palms, kissing him for all he was worth. Endless nights and endless days of loneliness faded as Lister wrapped arms tight around him, kissing him back. When he finally released Lister, his roommate looked shellshocked and hungry. Ravenous, even. Rimmer could relate.
"Why now?" Lister asked as he licked his lips.
Rimmer tracked that little pink tongue-tip like a Risk roll of the dice. "No more rules. No more chastisements. No more voice in my head, telling me no," he answered thickly. "I do what I want from now on, and I want you."
Lister's eyes darkened. "Have me, then."
The end
