Hey, I finally finished my Lister x Rimmer [livejournal.com profile] 1sentence. Rated around PG-13, I guess, and a really mixed bunch. Some are preslash or slash, some introspective friendship-type things, they're in no particular order and scattered out among much of the series, lots of them are episode tags, some may or may not be OOC, many weasel around prompts in various ways and all of them were fun.

#1 - Comfort

Not knowing how much the sight hurt Rimmer, being able to hug his counterpart Ace, who was so much and yet so little like him, was at least a bit of comfort for Lister.

#2 - Kiss

Rimmer's face was so close to Lister's as he pleaded for help that they could've kissed and Lister felt so oddly touched by the situation that for a brief moment - before first realising Rimmer would probably view that as a horrible event too and then panicking at the thought himself - he consided actually doing it just to get rid of the miserable expression on the other man's face.

#3 - Soft

Lister's bare skin felt warm, soft and clean under his hands, much different from what Rimmer'd accused him of throughout the years, and some spots made him tremble deliciously when touched.

#4 - Pain

He'd really wanted to think more positively about Lister, to see him as a decent person and feel like it was alright to like him, he'd even been willing to accept something as absurd as a guitar made of camphourwood, but when Kryten opened the chest so he could look inside, Rimmer only felt the pain of disappointment and betrayal.

#5 - Potatoes

While it may have been a mistake to think you could solve any major problems just with potatoes, as a great book had once stated, the same didn't appear to be true of heated arguments followed by equally heated sex.

#6 - Rain

Once Rimmer had admitted to himself he was in fact falling in love with Lister, it began to seem a lot less scary - it was a pleasant, relaxing feeling and made life better rather than worse as he'd feared, much like warm rain interrupting a hot summer day.

#7 - Chocolate

Lister smirked as he slowly ate the half-melted chocolate, quite aware of the way Rimmer was watching him.

#8 - Happiness

He'd been happier than for quite a few months when Rimmer appeared to have surprisingly returned to Starbug, but when Lister woke up and realised it had been a dream, all that was left was hurt, upset and something almost like disgust.

#9 - Telephone

In a way their relationship was very much like a long-distance relationship, like looking at each other's picture, talking on the telephone, long kisses on rare fleeting meetups and not knowing it any of it was going to last.

#10 - Ears

Lister thought that while Rimmer's one-time comparison of his own ears to radar dishes hadn't been that far off, the way the slightest touch to them could make him gasp and shiver more than made up for it.

#11 - Name

Most people would've seen the variety of "nicknames" they still kept on using for each other as a clear sign of hostility, but to them just the fact they cared enough to put their time into coming up with them was a clear sign of affection.

#12 - Sensual

Somewhat as a result of their inability to touch, they had developed the art of sensual innuendo and glances to a level even the eighteenth-century French court would've envied.

#13 - Death

Of course they had to celebrate Rimmer finally having a tangible physical form, and of course (from Lister's view, at least) this involved lots of alcohol, so when a quite drunk Lister sloppily kissed him for the first time outside Artificial Reality, Rimmer found it perfectly reasonable to explain his life getting so much better since he'd died by reasoning that if life without love was death, it'd certainly make sense for death with love to be life.

#14 - Sex

Lister smirked to himself thinking that having been in another person's body would certainly make sex with them a lot more interesting.

#15 - Touch

As he and Rimmer snuck down to the Artificial Reality Suite for a few space moments, Lister considered how few people would ever truly understand how special the ability to touch someone you loved was.

#16 - Weakness

Unsurprisingly Rimmer had a weakness for genuine compliments - each one would make him tear up a little, and though he tried to hide it, Lister would notice, wish he could hug him and almost feel bad for trying to be nice.

#17 - Tears

Lister forced himself to bite back the tears all the way until Rimmer had left Starbug for good because somewhere deep down he knew he both could and truly wanted to accomplish something greater than aimlessly drifting through deep space for the rest of his days.

#18 - Speed

Rimmer had never told anyone that when they'd broken the speed of light he had briefly seen an echo of his future because at the time he hadn't understood his comment that "I can't tell you anything because if I know you, which I do, you'll just mess it up for yourself", but now, standing at the spot this had happened and trying to recall the exact words, he thought that maybe he did.

#19 - Wind

Intrigued by the way the wind didn't seem to affect Rimmer's hair even now that he'd gotten the hard-light drive, Lister couldn't help but reach out and run his fingers through it.

#20 - Freedom

If you'd asked Rimmer about freedom a few years ago, he'd have scoffed at the concept, but now he was more likely to answer it was the right to be whoever and whatever you wanted, the knowledge you were accepted for it, the ability to hold close and make love to the one you loved and the certainty no one would despise you for it.

#21 - Life

Rimmer had always considered himself to be dead, an empty simulated hull, almost nonexistant, but ever since the evening Lister had sat down next to him, said "but man, you can still think and you can still feel, you can love and if that's what makes us alive, how can you be dead?" and looked at him in that really concerned way, he'd felt inexplicably more alive.

#22 - Jealousy

The fact that Lister's jealousy had made him act quite irrational after it seemed like Rimmer was going to stay on the Holoship may have seemed like a bad thing, but considering the feelings it ended up revealing between them, it wasn't actually that bad in the end.

#23 - Hands

Attempting to take Rimmer's hand caused an odd prickling sensation in Lister's own, like it had fallen asleep except without the cold, and though it was almost unpleasant, he kept on doing it just for the certainty that this was real.

#24 - Taste

Lister found the fact that Rimmer - being a hologram - didn't taste of anything somewhat unnerving, but it never stopped him from kissing the other man, or from anything else.

#25 - Devotion

In the beginning the only reason Rimmer had bothered with the task of keeping his bunkmate sane was because it ensured his own survival (insofar as you could still call it that for someone who was already dead), but years later it had turned into honest loving devotion.

#26 - Forever

When Rimmer had fallen asleep next to him, Lister traced over the "H" on his forehead and suddenly realised that even though one day he'd die too, technically they could be together forever; and while the idea scared him somewhat, at the same time part of him got a bit less scared of that eventual end.

#27 - Blood

Listed helped Rimmer up from the sharp rocks he'd fallen onto, wincing when he hissed in pain, and was both startled and fascinated to briefly see holographic blood on his own fingers.

#28 - Sickness

Finding Lister passed out and presumably burning up on the floor and feeling his heart skip a beat despite not technically having one anymore, Rimmer wondered why White Corridor 159 seemed to always attract the worst possible outcome of anything.

#29 - Melody

Rimmer had to wonder if this relationship was really doing him any good when he realized he'd been humming the same smegging tune Lister had almost driven him mad with all these years ago, but the question was quickly answered by the warm, content feeling when the younger man grinned cheekily and snuggled into his side.

#30 - Star

"D'you think Red Dwarf counts as a shooting star now?" Lister had asked, pointing at the enormous ship slowly moving across the sky above them, and though Rimmer had groaned, he had to consider that in a way it certainly seemed to have granted a lot of his wishes.

#31 - Home

Unlike Lister who didn't appear to have lost his hope even after so many years, Rimmer had never believed they were ever going to get back home; but quietly standing in the Observation Dome together, he felt unexpectedly content and warm and accepted and wondered if if really mattered that much, seeing how much more this was like home than anything he could've come back to.

#32 - Confusion

At first Lister had been confused and unable to tell the two Rimmers apart, but then he'd began to pick up on suble differences, on the way one of them would hesist a little before snarking at him, seem a bit less certain he was infallible and get slightly nervous when he'd clearly been wrong about something, and known which one would have to stay.

#33 - Fear

Of course part of the reason Rimmer had been so determined to undo the change in the time line was that he couldn't bear the idea of Lister being more successful than him, but another, smaller part was a strange fear of the idea that the Lister he'd known might be gone for good.

#34 - Lightning/Thunder

In a strange way their relationship was a lot like a thunderstorm - the less time passed between lightning and thunder, the closer it was.

#35 - Bonds

One of the reasons he'd treated Lister so horribly both before and a long time after the accident was because he was scared - he wasn't used to any kind of bonding with people, let alone true friendship, and thought of it as just another thing he'd mess up on.

#36 - Market

Being dragged down to Red Dwarf's mall (though not literally for lack of a tangible form) had done nothing for Rimmer's mood, and it was only made worse by Lister fooling around with every gadget and trinket humanity had never needed, but this development was completely and abruptly reversed when Lister turned around, smiling slightly, and offered him a plain silver ring.

#37 - Technology

For all the marvelous things technology had done for him, bringing him back from the dead so long ago and now essentially giving him a new body, allowing him to really touch the man he loved, it couldn't get rid of Rimmer's sudden fear of what actually doing it might lead to.

#38 - Gift

Even though the idea had backfired quite badly, Rimmer had to admit to himself that the thought behind it, the idea that Lister cared about him enough to give part of his own memory to him just to see him happy for once, was touching enough to be a fine gift of its own.

#39 - Smile

At one point seeing either of them truly smile in public had been a rare thing, Lister being more to likely grin amusedly and Rimmer to sport some conbination of frown, scowl and smirk, but ever since the accident had drastically reduced their respective social groups (not that there had been much to lose in the first place in Rimmer's case) and thus forced them to try and get along, this had slowly but steadily changed.

#40 - Innocence

Rimmer had stayed rather innocent when it came to loving relationships, and while in a way it was admittedly, well, cute, Lister was quite aware of and somewhat saddened by the fact that this only meant he'd never gotten a chance to learn.

#41 - Completion

His new knowledge of what being a hologram was like - smeg, in a way of what being Rimmer was like - had unexpectedly completed something in Lister, though he wasn't sure what it was or if he wanted to find out.

#42 - Clouds

At first Lister panicked when he suddenly woke up and saw through still somewhat cloudy eyes that he was in Rimmer's bunk, but then he remembered there was no reason to worry about anything horrible coming from it anymore and contently settled back to sleep.

#43 - Sky

The sky always looked the same seen from Red Dwarf, almost black speckled with tiny dots you could never quite reach, and it was the realisation that Earth was just another one of them now and would probably always stay that way that made Lister wonder if maybe feeling something more for his bunkmate wasn't that bad after all.

#44 - Heaven

While what they had certainly wasn't perfect, and neither of them would've compared it to heaven even if they'd believed in such a place, it was much better than what they'd expected when their strange companionship had begun years ago.

#45 - Hell

Of all the horrid things their Low selves had made Lister do, for him being forced to crush High Rimmer's light bee had been the closest thing to hell.

#46 - Sun

The warmth Rimmer's body gave off was more like that of a sunray than of a living being, but Lister soon found that leaning into it with closed eyes, he barely noticed the difference..

#47 - Moon

Rimmer didn't care much, having been born and raised on Io, but to Lister watching the moon just wasn't the same if it wasn't Earth's moon.

#48 - Waves

Their relationship changed in waves, one day spent in snarking annoyance much like they'd started out years ago and the next cuddled together without speaking only to move to something almost like normal friendship yet later, and maybe that was the reason why despite its seeming improbability, it worked.

#49 - Hair

Though it seemed strange even to himself, somehow Rimmer had gotten into the habit of playing with Lister's dreads as he drifted off to sleep.

#50 - Supernova

Rimmer was a bit like a supernova, Lister had once drunkenly pondered in these early months after coming out of stasis - he'd become the brightest and seemingly most alive he'd ever been when he'd really already died.

There's also a version with commentary. Because that's the sort of thing I do in order to procrastinate. It's got musings about what they're like, what their relationship is like, what being a hologram is like and lots of apologies for assorted things. People who enjoy this sort of thing will find this to be the sort of thing they enjoy. =^u.u^=

Will you marry me?

Seriously, this was wonderful in so many ways. Especially for me now, working as I am to write 100 fics, this was a wealth of inspiration (and intimidation, because, well, you're good!). I'll have to read the annotated version later, and I'll give some detailed feeback on that.
