Hi, folks!
I just had an idea (for someone else to write) for a story. I don't think it's been done before for this fandom. Anyway, you know how sometimes people write an 'It's a Wonderful Life'-type story? Well, I was thinking that maybe we could have a story where Rimmer is contemplating suicide for whatever reason, and an angel saves him. The angel decides to show Rimmer what the world would have been like if he'd never been born.
As it turns out, the world would have been much better in pretty much all respects. It wouldn't make any difference to his family, but that leak would never have happened, so the crew wouldn't have died. It all seems perfect, and isn't making Rimmer feel any better.
But then the angel shows him Lister. And Lister is in a bad way. Without Rimmer there to annoy him, keep him (partially) in check, write him up all the time, etc, he's basically got no direction, and mouths off to superiors who will actually punish him, badly at that. And Lister's close to dying of alcohol poisoning.
Rimmer has a choice. He could leave this new world as it is, and stay 'dead', thus saving the lives of all the crew members. Or he could get the angel to set things back in place, and save Lister. So he has to choose between the greater good, or Lister.
Anyway, I don't think I could do justice to this story. Partly because I've only seen the film once. I just thought I'd put this out there, in cyberspace, and hope someone takes up the challenge. Perhaps more than one someone!
