A ficlet sequel to Monster. I think I have 2 emotionally incompatible AUs going on, so I divvyed the fics into 1 and 2. This comes in 2, after Monster. The boys demanded that they not be left just sitting there not talking, so I moved on. Kahvi is right - they do take on a life of their own!
I noticed in VI that Rimmer pretty much stayed soft-light until something happened that necessitated going to hard-light. But in VII, he was always hard-light. This was probably due in reality to some minor costume-change preference, but I can run with it, can't I?
I don't trust you, Listy.
I also made a few changes to the Rimmervid - call it v1.3. Simbi Ani made a good point about putting in titles, so I did that as well.
Putfile - small download.
Right-click and save - big file.

Date: 2006-02-16 09:55 am (UTC)Knitting Lister! OMG... I love it! So wonderful. I think this is my favorite part of the fic, apart from the lovely ending bit. What a guy...
Like the "fwup" of the hard/soft light change (made me think of Nightcrawler from X-Men), as well as the uniform change. I know the uniform change is canon, but it's so rarely used in fic (that I've seen at least), and it was a nice touch.
"It wasn't nitrous. It was helium."
Rimmer sniggered.
I could really see Rimmer's face here erupting into a real, honest smile. Like a glimpse of his true self, ya know? Wonderful.
Minor nitpick (or would that be Brit-pick?) - Lister pronouces the letter "h" as "haitch". In fact, they all do; even Kryten and Cat, which is completely wrong for their accents. It's a feature of some regional dialects in Britain, and is often the best way to spot a Brit faking an otherwise perfect American accent. Well, that and that they use intrusive "r"s, but that's another matter. Not that it matters, of course, I just think its interesting. :)
Ah, the ending. Great use of body language with Rimmer; I can really feel his discomfort and almost sense what he's thinking. And Rimmer does not panic at the idea that Lister wants him, which is good. I do that too much, I think, because it's so much easier. Heh.
"Go to hard light, would yeh?"
Silence.
"Go to hard light, man." Lister swallowed. "Rimmer." He could feel that his own voice was starting to quaver. "Please."
*swoons*
They were soft, warm, slightly staticy, and tasted very faintly of mint.
Must be a little bit like kissing a TV-screen apart from the mint. Um. Not that I'd know what kissing a TV is like. Ahem. *looks around shiftily*
and he would have loved nothing more than to suck them into his mouth and devour them.
Yes! Do it! Except don't, because it'd be wrong. *sigh* Aaaahhh.... Grrr... Ahem.
And last line. Heeeeeeeeeeeee... *collapses*
Sorry for the humongous detailed comments, but I really liked it, and I'm bored at work. :)

Date: 2006-02-16 05:32 pm (UTC)They are such fabulous characters, and it's hubris of me to write them after G/N gave them life, but it's so much fun.
We never actually see him switch in canon, that I know of - Legion turns him off and then turns him on, so it's not really a changeover. That time and the time he was 'rebooted' in Gunmen, there was this mwuuaaauuummmmmm... noise, and I figgered a minor version of that would work for the swap, too.
I just love the idea of the uniform change from hard to soft light. I dunno why, but I find that idea of theirs very pleasing.
OMG, the Rs! There are a couple of times when Robert just goes in with the Rs and makes me yelp. He does toss in "idear," too, frequently. Thanks for the "haitch" - easy change. I read your journal entries on the difference in reaction to accents with interest (just have nothing constructive to add to them).
I don't think even canon-Rimmer would panic, although he would be uncomfortable. I mean, putting your hand on a guy's inner thigh is not a gesture of platonic mateship, but Rimmer was more bemused than freaked when Lister did it in Terrorform. And let's face it - his low wanted to have Lister, and his high babbled love poetry at him... :D
Or a computer monitor.
Oh, I so wanted them to have hotsteamysex, but Rimmer's not ready yet...

Date: 2006-02-16 07:10 pm (UTC)Good point about the Rimmer-panic, or lack thereof. It's true, he's like; "huh?" Like he almost can't connect with the idea that someone could be attracted to him. Oh dear... That sounds so sad...
Lister did the right thing, 'twas a good ending. Rimmer then going quietly back to read was good too. I have to wonder what's going on in his mind...

Date: 2006-02-16 07:16 pm (UTC)I would guess that's exactly how it played out in Rimmer's mind. Lister is trying to counteract the "Rimmer hates himself" mojo, after all. And the latter seems surprised, not horrified.
I can't imagine that he's doing a good job of concentrating on his book! This is all about gestures, though; showing trustworthiness, showing trust, dipping a toe into giving Listy access to Rimsy's vulnerabilities.
