Title: Walk
Summary: Darn Skutters. Darn holograms. Slight CL slash.
Rating: Light PG-13
This is not supposed to make sense. This is supposed to be short, yes. I’d appreciate it if no-one came knocking down my door, looking to kick me. ^_^
Walk
It was incredible, Lister thought, as he strolled down the corridor at a slow pace, his bright and eager eyes fixed on the piece of machinery in his hands, and his feet automatically taking him forwards, his mental map of the ship now being so perfect that he knew what, where and who to avoid.
“Hey! Wait up!”
Lister barely glanced up at the sound of new shoes tapping against the corridor floor, merely nodding and acknowledging Cat with a “Hi” before turning his full attention to the small device in his hands. Curious, the feline leaned over his shoulder to get a closer look.
“What’s that? It’s pretty.”
Lister looked up fully, grinning. “Yeah, you haven’t seen one of these, have you? Check it out…” Putting it in Cat’s hand so that they were holding it between them, the two walked down the corridor together, whispering and talking over it as Lister started tapping some buttons on the little device.
“And if you take a look at this…” He stepped over an extremely large puddle of oil leaking into the middle of the corridor from one of Bob the Skutter’s baby skutters. The baby skutter was making small squeaky noises of what was presumably agony, but it seemed that Bob’s sister Janet had the situation under control; wearing a cloth around her head with a mop clutched in her claw, she came towards the unfortunate little skutter, Cat lifting one leg high over her in order to let her pass.
Barely had they left the two service robots behind then Cat spoke again as they continued their stroll. “So what’s this bit here?” He pointed at a little white button and Lister’s smile grew.
“Oh, that. You’ve gotta see that, look…” He started to explain to Cat as a rumbling filled the corridor. The human quickly side-stepped, and Cat did the same, two seconds before a large boulder came hurtling down the corridor between them, continuing on its journey as three Skutters came whirring quickly in its wake, one with a camera, another clutching a microphone in its claw and the last clad in an outfit not unlike the one seen in the Indiana Jones films.
As soon as the Skutters had passed Lister and Cat immediately resumed their previous close positions, continuing down the corridor, Cat now giggling slightly as Lister demonstrated the device further.
“And if you snap your fingers slightly, you get this…” The human demonstrated, snapping his own fingers in a fervent enthusiasm and Cat’s own eyes widened as the device made its respective reaction. He too snapped his fingers and grinned as the piece of machinery acknowledged it.
Lister, his grin now so wide that his face was in danger of splitting, barely glanced up as they heard Rimmer’s voice, shrieking at a group of teenage Skutters who were all wearing sunglasses and clutching towels.
“I promised you nothing!” The hologram was absolutely beside himself. “ When did I give you a coupon for a free afternoon in the machine-sauna?!” He was shouting so loudly and angrily that he barely seemed to notice when Cat and Lister passed either side of him, lifting the device up over his head so that it wouldn’t pass through his soft-light.
“And if you nod your head and tap your feet,” Lister demonstrated, “Then look what it does – that’s got to be the best feature of all! Isn’t it fantastic?”
They reached Lister’s quarters and opened the door, still fervently discussing the small machine in their grasp. Cat was deeply impressed.
“I’ll say it is! Can I borrow it sometime?”
“Sure, you can borrow it right now, if you want.” Lister passed the device fully into the feline’s willing hands, kissed him briefly on the mouth and then drew back, looking pensive. “Ah, what the heck.” Both hands on Cat’s shoulders, he kissed him deeply for longer, and then with a brief wink, left the cabin, leaving Cat grinning after him. Then the feline, his full attention on the device, clambered up to the human’s empty bunk and lay back on the covers, giggling happily as he started playing with his new toy. His boyfriend found some really odd but fun things around this ship.
Fin.
