Just Watched "Only The Good"

In preparation for the latest Introcast (which won't be out now till early next week). I also watched the 15 minutes or so of deleted scenes and wondered yet again why they were cut. Most of them are much more interesting than what ended up in the ep.

For example, all the stuff in the Mirror Universe. Alternate Lister and Rimmer instantly assuming that this alternate Captain Rimmer (who has everything he wants, being a Captain and spectacularly well-endowed) must have Lister as his lover. Kochanski as a bimbo secretary (Chloe's clearly enjoying the chance to do something different). Cat as a brainy professor saying the "Sesium..." word and then the rest of the cast following suit.

Back in "our" universe we have Rimmer's transparent jealousy at Kochanski's approval of Lister's determination to go back and warn the crew about the corrosive micro-organism even though they're trying to escape. "No, Dave's right. He's looking at the big picture." Rimmer: "Yes, the big picture involves you, no clothes and a haystack."

Later, Hollister says Red Dwarf is being devoured from within by a corrosive micro-organism and Rimmer snipes "Yes, it's called lust". Lister and Kochanski look at each other and share a laugh for what may be the first time ever.

I suppose what I'm saying is that the fact the plot of the ep is such a mess makes it very fertile ground for us fic writers. There's all sorts of potential for jealousy, an OT3 and character development for Kochanski and nano-Rimmer. Ramble over. :)

Not exactly what you mean perhaps, but Kronette did actually write an excellent fic where nano-Rimmer manages to escape the disintegrating Dwarf, is mistaken for the Captain and, knowing he has nothing to go back to, plays along. First it turns out the Captain's sleeping with mirror Kochanski, then after Rimmer unintentionally offends her, mirror Lister makes his move. Yes, a fic with the real Captain Rimmer and First Officer Lister would be fun - I've only ever seen one in the old kink meme.

I think the deleted scenes would have added so much more to the plot and the series if they would have left them in. I actually liked the idea of Guys saving the ship and leaving the rest of the crew floating around in the other 'bugs and midgets. It makes more sense then Nano-Rimmer kneeing Death in the groin and running away.

Yes, I prefer that ending too. Heartless though it may seem, the crew abandoned our Boyz (and girl) to die. And in the Starbugs and Blue Midgets they'd have a reasonable chance of surviving until they found an S3 planet.

Plus I really like Lister, Kochanski and Cat doing the conga and drinking in celebration. :)

Apparently the reason it was cut is that everyone Doug and Ed Bye showed it to hated it. :/

You're right about the deleted stuff. There was a fan edit on youtube that made good use of it, but it doesn't seem to be up anymore - at least, I can't find it.

I never picked up on the jealousy and so forth in this episode, but clearlyI should have! I think in part, I've been blinded by the fact that, at least as far as I'm concerned, nano-Rimmer just isn't the right Rimmer. But of course, that's where mirror-Lister comes in.

Yes, Kronette's fic pairing nano-Rimmer with the mirror Lister thus leaving the door open for holo-Rimmer to return and woo our Lister seems an ideal solution to me.

I suppose a fic could be written where Lister realises how jealous nano-Rimmer is and eventually starts to wonder whether holo-Rimmer felt the same way. *Plot bunnies* ;)

The experience of watching Series VIII is about 100% better if you buy the 3 disc DVD with loads of extras - commentaries, documentary, smeg-ups and the aforementioned deleted scenes, plus lots of other stuff. It's been out for a while so you could probably pick it up secondhand for a few quid (or whatever the Aussie equivalent is). ;)

The series itself is weak, but the extras are great, trust me. :)

I've often thought that there were a few deleted moments in S8 between Lister and Kochanski that hinted at the relationship warming up and wondered why they were cut. There was nothing big but it would have added more depth.

Yes, it would have made the situation in "BTE" more poignant if we'd had more of a sense of them getting closer, even as friends. It was poignant anyway because Craig acted his socks off, but still.
