Unexplored Areas Of Red Dwarf (The Ship)

The vastness of the "gigantic red trash can" is a gift to ficcers.  The show may be restricted by budget, but we're not.  Right now the part of the ship I'd really like to see is the botanical gardens.  Mentioned in both the first and last episode, they'd be a nice area for the crew to relax in.  I wonder if Kryten retained his longing to plant a garden after his rebuilding by Lister?

Someone on TOS mentioned the Eden Project in Cornwall as a fantasy location for these gardens.  Sadly I doubt the producers would be able to afford that, but they'd be great.

Other areas which sound interesting are the penthouse suite on A Deck (mentioned in "Camille") and the mall (mentioned in "IWCD").  I have a personal head canon that the "BTE" bunkroom was chosen by Rimmer as it was First Officer quarters whereas the much grungier X bunkroom was Lister's choice.

So what areas would others like to see explored, either in fic or on the show?

I like to think that Kryten has a little plot of vegetables he uses for the crew's meals. And I know this will probably never happen due to budget restrictions, but I'd love to see one of their crazy golf championships as well, whether in the gardens or elsewhere. Presumably there's a recreation area somewhere (not the one in the brig).

That's a nice idea about the vegetable plot and of course it's supported by "Kryten". As for crazy golf, the more I think about it, the more I'd love to see it on the show. If not, it would make an hilarious fic. :D

The whole 'exploring new areas of the ship' scenario was one that Doug wanted to be the plot arc for series X - sadly something we didn't get to see. Perhaps, now he's got some ideas out of his head - this might make an appearance in XI?

Of course - I wonder whether the location scout put the idea in his head or whether it was already there. And then it turned into "Locations or audience", which was such a shame.

I'd absolutely love it if we saw new parts of the ship in XI (apart from bunkrooms and corridors). Surely Dave could give them a slightly higher budget now after the ratings X got? ;)

Ha! Yes, that topic's rather stolen my thunder. :) It's more relevant to this comm's raison d'etre, but Kahvi came up with it today and I posted this last night.

Otherwise I might well have gone with that instead. I might still, unless anyone else beats me to it. ;)

Although, in answer to the one question over there on this topic, I know Metalkatt has been thinking about the seeds and cuttings for plants for a few years. I think the concept is sort of wide fanon, like Rimmer's clothes and fluids dissolving upon leaving his projection.

Fanon is increasingly hard to distinguish from canon for me. I genuinely can't remember if there's ever been a line in the show indicating that Rimmer's clothes etc would do that or not. ;)

I was always sad that they never returned to the observation deck (that dome thing where you can look out at space). That looks terribly romantic and fluffy.

Oh, of course. The cast called it "Rimmer's angst room" and it made a big impression considering it was only in two eps. I'd really like it if it came back - maybe in the last ever ep. :)

I really need to get my hands on some of the novels so I can read them. I read quite a few fics where things were referenced from the novels. I feel like I'm missing out.

The novels are great! And all available on Amazon or in secondhand shops. A warning though, Rob Grant in particular enjoys torturing his creations. ;)
