Minor Characters And Rare Pairings

Reading Sallycandance's comment in the previous entry about it being nice to read a fic partly told from Petersen's POV got me thinking about other minor characters whom it would be nice to see more of in fic, whether as part of a L/R story or in their own right.

Of course people are already doing this - I've tried to flesh out Todhunter's character in my current WIP and "FSOS" has good roles for Kochanski, Petersen and even characters who barely appear in canon such as Sam Murray and Petrovitch.  But it's always fun to throw ideas about.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Rimmer and Lister from the perspective of semi-canon "RD's first gay couple" - the aforementioned Sam and his boyfriend Rick Thesen.  It'd be interesting to see if they picked up on the vibe between our Boyz.

I've mentioned before how it would be good to get more female characters' viewpoints, so I'll just list a few of my faves - KK, Nirvanah, Lise Yates, Mellie, Pree and Wendy (Rimmer's classmate in "The Beginning").   The same goes for male (to all appearances) characters like Hogey, Howard, "Jesus", Andy from "BTR", George McIntyre, Michael McGruder, "Dungo", Captain Platini, Ackerman and too many more to list.

So which characters would others like to read more of, whether in a "background" way or in their own fics, erotic or otherwise?  You never know, if you detail it here someone may get inspired and write it for you. ;)

Hmm. I did like Pree. Since she knows everything about the boys, would she ship them? Predict that they'll get together (much to their discomfort at first)? She'd need to be less murderous to be sustainable as a character, though.

God, now I'm imagining her calmly rattling off the precise details - "You will have sex this evening at exactly 22.00 hours after ingesting most of the contents of a 2 litre jar of GELF hooch. Due to the alcohol intake you will fall asleep immediately afterwards". :D

I read an idea someone had of bringing back Holly with Pree's face and the Boyz being freaked out even after Kryten assures them that it really is Holly not Pree. Actually that would be a very Holly thing to do. :)

There's Camille, the pleasure GELF, who may have interesting insights, as she is created to form at least some sort of bond with whomever she interacts, otherwise she wouldn't be able to look and behave like their 'perfect mate'. Also, can Camille only be female persons, or is she gender-fluid? Did she sense that neither Rimmer nor Lister were 'perfect' for each other in the conventional way and opted for something more obvious?

And Kassandra could have a wise insight or two that can completely smegify Rimmer and Lister.

Camille specifically states "We're androgynous, but I suppose you could call [Hector] my husband". So yes, she could take a male form. Perhaps the reason she didn't is because she sensed that neither were ready to handle their true desire.

In "Last Human", the symbi-morph is arguably Camille updated and takes the forms of both Kochanski and Rimmer in an attempt to please Lister, so even Doug realises it's not as clearcut as the show tends to make out. ;)

In any case, interesting characters for a POV fic.

Also, there is WAY too little Cat centred and Cat POV fic out there. Just saying. I love Cat.

I don't consider Cat, Kryten and Holly minor characters which is why I didn't mention them, but I agree. :)

Actually, the champion of rare pairs and minor characters is probably our mod Lauren. Just check out her fics on AO3. ;)

After I finish Lessons (which I am working on this weekend; making serious progress!), I have a slash story that I've gotten partially written, that features the Cat. I've got a minor obsession with Cat this year, so I got 3 chapters written, but the beginning needs work before I can move forward. But that will be the next story I write.

Pleased to hear that. It's not poor Cat's fault that a certain scene in Rob Grant's "Backwards" put so many of us off the idea of him having sex. :p There must be ways to get around the anatomical issues. ;)

More seriously, although I like Cat I have problems imagining him having deep feelings for anyone besides himself. Not that that's obligatory for a slash fic, of course. Smut is fine. :)

Cat is so self-centered and well... cat-like that I have a hard time imagining him having a relationship with anyone. The only pairing that I could see working would be Cat/Cat. Has that been done before?

Of course my favorite Cat is also season 1-2 Cat who spends his time preening, yowling and trying to make himself look big. I found him just hilarious in those early episodes. I could see Cat from more of the Starbug era being better to ship since his personality did change quite a bit. I was quite happy when Red Dwarf X seemed to return Cat's personality to his original more cat-like state.

I didn't go into detail, but I have written a fic where the Boyz all get to have sex with the person they want in Legion's space station and for Cat it was obviously himself. I only implied it though as the main focus was L/R.

Surely someone must have written it explicitly, but I can't remember reading it.

I would swear I've read that one and enjoyed it janamelie. But I have to admit, when I started reading all the Red Dwarf slash, I sort of binged on it and read everything so fast I have a hard time remembering who wrote what and where I read it. I really need to go through and reread everything again and take a bit more time to enjoy it. I was like a kid in a candy store.

Oh, I was exactly the same. It took me about a year to really take in all the fic by rereading. You probably know this, but I found it very handy to favourite the best fics so I could find them again.

I agree. Season 1 and 2 Cat is my favourite - "Ah, too slow, chicken marengo! Too slow for this cat!"

Yeah, remember when Camille became the perfect partner for everyone, and for Cat she simply turned into Cat?! Very fitting.

Personally, I want a coda fic for the ep "The Last Day", when they all wake up after seriously partying, and Cat finds suspenders and a police woman's helmet in his bunk. I want to read a story about how those things got there, and it had better be d-i-r-t-y LOL

Oh fantastic! New reading material for tonight! :) Looking forward to checking those out, I've always been fond of Petersen. Well I say always, but as I've only been watching the show for less than a year it does sound a bit silly doesn't it? I'm fond of Petersen, I'll leave it at that. :D
