This is such a good explanation for the cold, emotionally distant vibe I get from the early scenes in "BTE". If Rimmer and Lister are in the early stages of a relationship, unsure how much they mean to each other, and then the spectre of Earth puts doubt in both their minds it makes so much more sense. Not only from a slashy perspective, the whole dramatic tone shift from Series VIII (plus the loss of Kochanski of course).

I realise it's not what Doug had in mind, but I prefer this version. ;)

Thank you. :) Yeah, though I changed some significant points of canon, I did approach this as a sort of explanation/fix for the elements of BTE that were weird to me.

I can see what you meant about it being difficult to work out on Tumblr the other day! But I think you've done a good job.

Katerina's behavior towards Rimmer seems to make more sense as a manifestation of Rimmer's fear and self-loathing than as anybody's wish fulfillment... so in fact I think you made BtE make considerably more sense to me!

Thank you! Yeah, honestly, the idea that it was a joy/elation squid in BTE has never really worked for me. Kryten and the Cat don't seem to get much out of the hallucination, for one thing.
