AU Fics

They keep popping up on Tumblr or rather, ideas for them do.  We're having a lot of fun discussing them so I thought I'd post on here too.

I have an idea in my head right now which is the most cliched scenario ever and I apologise in advance, but ... I can't help thinking that stressed student Rimmer developing a crush on the most popular, flirty barista at his local coffee shop would be adorable.  Sorry. :o

Can anyone else think of something less obvious?  The scenario in my icon would be a start, I suppose. :)

It could be a pub instead of a coffee shop? Maybe that's clichéd too, I don't know.

I'm often astounded by the sheer number of high school AUs in big fandoms.

The thing is, I can understand the attraction of coffee shop and high school AUs. Almost everyone can relate to them and it's probably a cathartic way to "fix" your teens and early 20s by writing wish fulfilment. Then again, all fanfic is wish fulfilment on some level.

I've actually never read one and my brain has already started trying to compose the coffee shop thing so I may just give in and write it. ;)

I'm always getting ideas for AU's but having done the Fifty Shades series and my serial killer one recently, I feel like I should focus my energy on something more rooted in the show for my next fic.

I'm still throwing around ideas for the stable boy one we talked about :-)

I posted ideas on Tumblr a while ago for a 'Sound of Music' AU and a 'Top Gun' AU but I also like the idea of an X-Files AU where Rimmer is Mulder and the explanation for everything is 'Aliens!' and Lister is Scully, following him around with a torch and a put-upon expression.

That stable boy one is extremely appealing, especially if hay lofts feature. ;)

Lister as Maria Von Trapp is both mad and perfect. The thought of him as a leather clad pilot isn't really that far from canon and I love the thought of Rimmer as Mulder obsessing about aliens. :D

Wow, there are just so many scenarios these characters would work in. Of course it's the classic yin and yang thing - they set each other off by virtue of their differences. :)

Interesting. "Stasis Leak" definitely makes a good case for Rimmer being in love first even if he couldn't admit it to himself.

I always thought Regency!Dwarf would be fun, but I ain't gonna write it. There would have to be zombies or something for me to do it.

Oh and we will not speak of the episode that they attempted to do using Regency... No speakie of that.

Well, it would be a good setting in which to include stable boy Lister - except that that would bring in the ugly question of real life racism, so I can understand Felineranger leaning more towards a steampunk setting.

I don't think "Beyond A Joke" is quite as bad as its reputation, but it ain't great either. ;)

I still kind of fancy the idea of Rimmer and Lister as rival hair-dressers. But I think I more fancy just drawing them like that for the imagery, rather than it being an actual story. I think I just want to make them both up as hair-dressers, and draw Rimmer glowering jealously at Lister through the big mirrors.

I can actually see it really clearly - Lister in his "Meltdown" green and black shirt and the leather trousers, happily chatting to a client whilst he does her hair and looking impossibly pretty. Why can't I draw? :/

Being able to draw is a blessing and a curse, because you're almost never as good as you'd like to be. I can picture things SO clearly in my head, but actually being able to do them justice is a completely different thing. :)

I don't have nearly enough time to practice as much as I ought to either!

That's a cute idea! My only idea would be to have our Rimmer come back from being Ace, and he'd feel replaced, and some non sappy way finds out that he's not replaced.
