With all the great stories peeps are bringing back from DJ, it's got me wondering what people's favourite RD stories are from the cast. I don't mean personal stories about meeting them, but more the stories that they've told about making the show over the years. What is your favourite moment from behind the scenes that you've heard about from the commentaries, documentaries or Robert's memoirs?

All of the BTS of Blue. The kiss of course (the commentary on the kiss is great as well), but also Black Wednesday/Monday/no one remembers what day it was, the making of the munchkins, the mirror trick with the fire, etc.

Also, not exactly what you were looking for, but I've always enjoyed Robert's account of filming the American pilot.

Ooh, and one more: Danny's slashy* comment in Better than Life. "I always thought you were going up [to the Observation Dome] to ask him for a date!"

I need to think more about my favourite moment(s), but since you mentioned Robert's memoirs, I have a question for anyone with both editions - since I already own the updated version as an audiobook, is there any point at all in buying a secondhand copy of the original edition for 50p? I saw one in a charity shop today and am sorely tempted to grab it even if only for the photos.

There's one of Craig cutting off his dreadlocks after Series VI, so I suppose at one stage they weren't sewn in. Robert specifically captions it with a reference to him growing them himself.

It's up to you really. I have both for the sake of completeness but I don't think there's any major differences.

Obviously all the BTS of "Blue", especially the part where Robert tells us that Chris and Craig weren't all "Ugh" after The Kiss and then we actually see them smiling as they pull apart. :D

The bit in "We're Smegged" where Danny and Chris tease Craig about his swagger. It's just so matey.

Mike Agnew's tale about nearly coming to blows with Craig. And Paul Jackson's. Plus the tale of PJ directing "White Hole" and scaring the hell out of Danny.

Everybody's comments on Chris being oiled in "Terrorform". "I would've shagged him!"

Chris imitating Craig on "The Inquisitor" commentary. I could go on. :)

Oh, I adore that bit from We're Smegged. "Getting a bit of air there, to let the equipment cool down..." XD I also like the part where the cast talk about fatherhood.

The way Chris casually plays ball with a lemon as he says it amuses me. The entire exchange just demonstrates their longstanding, teasing camaraderie so well. :)

I still have yet to get through all the commentaries on the DVDs, but I've already seen these and would have mentioned them all.

I actually snuck that, "I'd have shagged him!" line into one of my fics. Craig is such an inspiration. :D

Definitely love the behind the scenes about Danny being late, and Robert's impersonation of Paul. XD I wish I could remember more examples that I loved. I really love the banter in the Series 2 commentaries, and them singing the theme song in the Series 4 commentary. <3

For obvious reasons, most of my favourite stories are Craig ones. But the one about Danny turning up late for White Hole only to find PJ there is awesome :-)

I think my fave is the one from the S5 documentary where Craig didn't turn up one day, and at first they all just assumed he was late but then after a while he still hadn't shown up so they called his girlfriend and she was like 'No, he should be there' so then they were getting really worried and starting to think maybe he'd had a car accident or something. And then it turned out that the whole time Craig was asleep under a pile of blankets on the bunk.

I don't know what I like most about this story; the fact that having got there early, Craig still somehow managed to be late, or the fact that I find it simply adorable that he'd apparently burrowed into the blankets so far that no-one could even tell he was in there, like a hamster in a nest. I bet he's a terror for stealing bedcovers.

I've thought of another - the entire "Cast Signing Session" from the "BTE" DVD. Chris imitating Craig and Craig's reaction makes me happy. :)

I can just imagine him finally burrowing his way out of the blankets. All bleary-eyed and blinky. He is just too adorable.

I wouldn't call it a favorite because it's good, per se, but finding out at least partly why Chris got so angry with Craig over the "Gunmen" bit behind the scenes where Craig slapped Chris's horse and sent it trotting was illuminating - it was owing to a previous experience Chris had on an aborted first date with a co-worker in the 80s where they went horseback riding, and she fell off her horse and hit her head, and ended up in the hospital in a coma for a while, and with permanent physical damage once she woke up. I could see how someone disregarding equine safety after that would set off a person.

It's odd — I've watched a few recentish Q&As in which Chris said it was Danny who slapped the horse. It must have been Craig, though, since Craig himself owns up to it.

My understanding of the incident (from Robert's version) is that Craig slapped his own horse causing it to bolt and spook the other horses, not that he actually slapped the horse Chris was on. Having said that, you can still see why Chris was pissed off (he'd apparently told Craig just moments before not to mess about).

Poor guy. All he had to do was make it from one end of the street to the other at a gentle trot. That was all. But no.

Because Craig.

I’ve only ever listened to it as an audiobook, but having picked up the first edition in a charity shop I’ve been reminded how funny and fascinating it is.

Regarding “Demons & Angels” - “Chris was in a kinky stockings-and-suspenders Nazi whip-me fantasy, something he felt very at home in”.

“At the end of that day we were all a mass of bruises and minor burns, except Chris. Actually, I think he secretly wanted to get on his motorbike and ride home in his kinky Low Rimmer outfit. But maybe that’s just me projecting.”

And this description of Craig and Danny going clubbing: “Suddenly three very smartly dressed black men would enter the hotel bar escorted by four or five drop-dead-beautiful women, and Craig and Danny would go off clubbing, which I assume has something to do with sex in interesting positions with people of a like mind, which is why they all joined a club.”

“This is the story of my life, everyone else goes clubbing, I go off to bed.”

“The Prince of Packet is a popular nickname for Mr Charles. This is due to the mildly shocking size of his lower member, or tummy banana, otherwise known as packet.”

Sadly, the written version is missing Craig’s joke about his ancestry in relation to his endowments. :p


Maybe that’s in the updated print version? Which I think I’m going to have to request as a present. :p


It’s not in my updated (2012) version. Robert said he plans to write more, though, so if someone could remind him to add it in for the next edition…
