This is such an utterly beautiful episode, I could get into bed with it.
The characterisation of the main four is spot on, the little moments between them are just lovely. Butler (played by a well known British actor called Dominic Coleman) and The Universe (who also played The Lift in Give & Take) are incredible. It's just soooooooo Hitchhikers Guide.
Watched it twice back to back and could easily see it again. I suspect this is going to be one of my favourites <3
That was ... what's the word, the most touching, episode, of Red Dwarf I think may exist? Besides perhaps "Blue," in the sense of self-examination and coming to an understanding. I love how Lister's perception of how fast he got over his own midlife crisis dovetails with Rimmer's point that denying a midlife crisis is a key component of having one - we know of course that Lister's midlife crisis lasted MUCH longer. (And I guess maybe Rimmer's happened while he was off being Ace; what a fun time THAT must have been. Is Cat's version still to come because he's the youngest?)
(Which makes me realize something: Lister's not mentioned Kochanski once in five episodes, when he was bringing her up in nearly every episode of X. Hmm. I don't know what to make of that.)
It feels like Kryten's little monologue was a nice little declaration of family among the four of them - that they all love one another, in their fashion, and this is how Kryten is able to come up with this conclusion, having lived in the middle of it for a few decades.
Better look at part of Lister's PJs. His pants are also arted up! I wonder if the official RD shop will ever sell these - it seems like it's something that could be a requested item. They could be marketed to rural America, for those people who like to hit the frozen foods section of Walmart in the same thing they wear to bed later on.
It's just utterly incredible isn't it? *hugs Krysis forever*
Ha! Maybe the very act of his going to away to be Ace was his mid life crisis!
Perhaps part of Lister's mid life crisis was to tell himself 'enough' over chasing Kochanksi. After all, he's now quite prepared to go into stasis for god knows how long, in potentially the complete opposite direction, in order to find another mech.

I would be so happy if the show directly addressed this.
Yay! Opening with another bunk scene! Even if they're back on Lister being incredibly disgusting, IT'S ANOTHER BUNK SCENE! I wanted these SO much. And those are SO pajamas. I was right!
The Full Lister. I am so claiming this for a future fic title. And Lister eating Choco Comets! I wonder what they actually were.
Cat's pink suit! Danny looks incredible.
I wish I could have seen Robert's face when they showed him that pink Kryten getup complete with crotch bling. OMFG.
Rimmer has a man-purse. Of course he does.
Man the model shots and CGI look so great this series.
Butler isn't Ade Edmonson is he? Hard to tell with all that latex.
This reminds me a lot of Legion, in a good way.
Wow, the GELFs certainly have gotten a step up to 2.0. What an improvement in the makeup and costuming!
OMG, everyone trying to pronounce the GELF language. I am dying.
The universe sounds like Morgan Freeman. I'm ok with that.
Not Adrian Edmonson, ah well! I should have guessed I wouldn't be able to ID someone with all that rubber on their face.
Aww, well that was cute. It reminded me a lot of old Red Dwarf. Probably the most of any of series XI we've seen so far. Definitely one of the better episodes of the series as well, probably. How many are left now?
Ooh! Interesting to read a live commentary! Thank you!
Choco Comets are Wheetos - those chocolate kinda hoop things?
Not Ade Edmonson but Dominic Coleman - a fab British actor. If Ade ever did RD I would die of excite!
I said to my husband that The Universe sounds like Morgan Freeman! It's just PERFECT.
All in all its just an utterly perfect episode and I love it to bits. Only one episode left of series XI! :-( But it's a doozy! Can't wait to see it for myself.
UKTV Play really didn't want me to see this - it kept skipping, jumping to adverts etc, a lot more than previously. This meant my first viewing wasn't ideal, so I've just watched it again. With just as much difficulty, but I wanted to be fair.
And I have to say that I now have a lovely warm feeling. Awww. :)
As others have said, Doug's basically made Lister having a mid-life crisis in X canon, which makes a lot of sense. Obviously part of the reason for all the KK references in X was the intention to bring her back in the last two eps, but it's still interesting that he has yet to mention her at all in XI. (Sidenote: I hope Chloe wasn't too disappointed when her involvement fell through.)
Anyway, I enjoyed this ep for many reasons - bunkroom scene, domestic breakfast scene with confirmation that Lister loves fry-ups (of course he would!), even Cat being sympathetic to Kryten and so much more.
Butler was a little grating but that was obviously intentional. I wonder if make-up deliberately made him look a bit like David Ross? Probably.
Oh no, not as far as I'm aware. I was referring to the original intention to bring her back in the last two eps of Series X before they had to be scrapped and replaced.
- âIs there anything you donât do for him?â For a second, I thought Rimmer (or someone) was going to go...somewhere else with that comment.
- Um, I would like a Full Lister, pls. It sounds delightful.
- The other boys sitting around listening to Krytenâs rambling (which must have been taxing for Robert, btw!), like a little family <3
- Pedantry time: Mozartâs variations on Twinkle, Twinkle/Ah! vous dirai-je, maman (he didnât write the tune itself; that was a childrenâs song that had been around for a few decades) was written when he was around 25, not 5. He did, however, compose other works, including symphonies, as a young child. Not sure if the scene was meant to be Rimmer being confused or the writing team not doing their research.
- Iâm easily squicked, so Krytenâs body turning independent of his head was bordering on body horror-y for me.
- The Kryten-Cat dance oh my goodness yes.
- Ooh, meta. They addressed the regression of Kryten and Listerâs relationship.
- Does Butler remind anyone else of Miracle Max (The Princess Bride)? Itâs his speech patterns, I think.
Really loved this episode đ The boys were all on such good form and seemed so relaxed doing this one. Rimmer and Lister are really growing into a bickering older couple more and more and I love how Rimmer always seems jealous of Kryten and how close he and Lister are. Butler was such a great addition hope he'll return one day.
Rimmer's OMG face at Lister when he sees Kryten - I need a gif and I need it soon.
Rimmer just letting Lister take the phone from him. Not even a bit of struggle. Just, "Yes, fine, your turn, but I'm still annoyed."
I only have one problem with this episode and it's something that I have a problem with within the reality of this series in general and that's the canon lack of aliens. It makes sense from a budget point of view to not have to create a slathering pulsating creature every week, or be like Star Trek where everyone looks human apart from having an extra nose or spots on their chest (which is even more ridiculous than no aliens at all IMO). But if this planet really IS it for intelligent life then I'm very upset about it XD
I finally got to see the episode and it was EXCELLENT. The bunk scene to open with, really sharp, not just a flimsy nostalgic callback - it seemed as good as any early-series bunk bicker!
Just love Cat's pink suit with those black skinny lapels and the close-fitted waistcoat! He looked amazing, and I'm so glad we saw him dance a bit. Apart from "Tongue Tied" and the roller-skating scene, Danny's moves have been criminally underused - sped up, cropped out, CGI'd over.
Butler was hilariously annoying, and the plot resolution was, well, heartwarming.
